Senators cruise past Baysox 11-7

BaysoxThe Baysox jumped out to an early 3-0 lead Saturday, but that was short-lived as Harrisburg scored four runs in the second inning and never looked back in an 11-7 win over Bowie. The loss is a season-high fourth-in-a-row at home for the Baysox.

The Baysox bullpen was tagged for six runs and surrendered two home runs in the loss as the pitching staff continued to struggle. Harrisburg outfielder Brian Goodwin had a two home run game and Senators third baseman Cutter Dykstra knocked in six RBI.

The Baysox got off to a blazing start against Harrisburg starter Colin Bates. Ozzie Martinez singled to lead-off the game and Mike Yastrzemski drew a walk before Trey Mancini hit a long home run to left field to give Bowie a 3-0 lead. The home run was Mancini’s third in the past five games as he continues his hot start with the Baysox.

The Senators used a big two out rally to come right back and take the lead in the top of the second inning against Baysox starter Joe Gunkel. With two outs, Drew Vettleson doubled to left field and scored on an Isaac Ballou single to center field. Gunkel then walked the next two batters to load the bases before Dykstra’s double to left field cleared the bases and gave Harrisburg a 4-3 lead.

Goodwin’s first solo home run in the top of the third inning to right field gave the Senators a 5-3 lead.

Bowie got one run back in the bottom of the third inning. Yastrzemski hit a lead-off double to center field, moved to third base on a Mancini ground out and scored on a Brandon Snyder groundout to make the score 5-4.

Harrisburg kept the runs coming in the top of the fourth inning against Baysox reliever Tim Berry. With one out, Harrisburg hit three straight singles to load the bases and Chris Bostick then brought a run home with a sacrifice fly. Another single by Goodwin brought home a second run and gave the Senators a 7-4 lead. Reliever Kenn Kasparek replaced Berry with the bases loaded and two outs to finish off the inning.

The Baysox pitching staff continued to struggle as Harrisburg added three more runs in the top of the fifth inning. Two singles put a pair of runners on base with two outs before Dykstra hit a three-run home run off Kasparek to give the Senators a 10-4 lead.

Yastrzemski hit a solo home run to lead-off the bottom of the seventh inning against Harrisburg reliever Wander Suero to cut the Senators lead to 10-5.

Goodwin’s second home run of the night in the top of the 8th inning against Baysox reliever Mychal Givens quickly made the score 11-5 for Harrisburg.

Bowie kept battling against Harrisburg reliever Nick Lee in the bottom of the eighth inning. Corban Joseph hit a lead-off single to left field and moved to second base when Johnny Ruettiger reached on a fielding error by Bostick. Erik Davis then replaced Lee on the mound and Yastrzemski hit a two-out RBI single to left field that plated one run and made the score 11-6.

The Baysox added one final run in the bottom of the ninth inning. Quincy Latimore drew a one-out walk but was thrown out at second base when Rossmel Perez reached on a force out. A wild pitch allowed Perez to get to second base when he scored on a single by Joseph and throwing error by Harrisburg first baseman Matt Skole. Joseph was thrown out going to second base on the play to end the game 11-7.

Gunkel lasted just three innings for the Baysox, allowing five runs on five hits while striking out one and walking two in the loss. Berry threw two-thirds of an inning and allowed two runs on four hits and a walk. Kasparek threw 1.1 innings and allowed three runs on three hits while striking out two. Orioles rehabbing reliever Jason Garcia threw two scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out three while walking one. Givens pitched the eighth inning and allowed one run on a home run while walking a batter and striking out the side. Reliever Gene Escat pitched a scoreless ninth inning for the Baysox, allowing one hit and striking out two.

Suero picked up the win for Harrisburg, throwing 2.2 innings and allowing one run on two hits while striking out one batter.

The team is home through Wednesday, June 22 for a seven game homestand against Harrisburg and the Reading Fightin Phils. Sunday is Orioles Pride Day with the Babe Ruth bobblehead giveaway for the first 1,000 fans 13 and older beginning at 2:05 p.m. RHP Terry Doyle (10-1, 2.00) is scheduled to pitch against Harrisburg’s RHP Nick Pivetta (0-0, 4.50).
