Leukemia Cup raises nearly $250K

Leukemia CupThe Maryland Chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society held the Annual Annapolis Leukemia Cup Regatta on May 29th and 30th. It was a record breaking year with 103 boats participating in the Regatta and $247,000 raised for the mission of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Leukemia Cup Sailing Regatta is a thrilling series of events that combine the joy of boating with the important task of raising money to cure cancer. The Leukemia Cup Regatta began in Annapolis 23 years ago and has spread to 46 sailing communities across the country. Since its inception, The Leukemia Cup Regattas have raised over 50 million for lifesaving research and patient services, bringing help and hope to patients and their families.

This important community event was kicked off at the Seersucker & Linen Summer Gala, hosted by Annapolis Yacht Club (AYC) on Friday May 29. Over 300 people attended the event which featured an ice luge for the signature Goslings Rum Swizzle, elegant hors d’oeuvres, a fabulous live and silent auction and live Caribbean style entertainment. Leukemia Cup Regatta National Sponsor Timex attended the event and provided all guests with Timex watches. The night concluded at Gold Sponsor restaurant partner Iron Rooster for the After Party.

On Saturday, May 30, the day kicked off with the Regatta at 10:00am which attracted 103 boats. The Harbor 20s had the largest class with 24 boats on the water. Later in the morning was the J80 Luncheon and Fun Race, Sponsored by Chic-Fil-A and hosted by Eastport Yacht Club. The local J/80 fleet took survivors and their families out on the water for a day of racing and celebrating survivorship. The weekend concluded with the Rock the Dock for a Cure Party and Awards Ceremony at the Eastport Yacht Club. This event featured the Regatta class awards and live entertainment by Swamp Candy Newgrass, BBQ by Grills on Wheels, beer, wine and the famous Frozen Mango Goslings Rum drink. Almost 400 people attended the event, and a great time was had by sailors and community members. EYC, Sailors for the Sea and Annapolis Green helped facilitate a Gold Certified Clean Regatta and recycling, composting and other green initiatives on the grounds of EYC for the Saturday events.

Sailors and community members also participated in the Off the Water Fundraising Race, with 15 teams and over 40 individuals raising $120,000. John Heintz, a Harbor 20 sailor currently in treatment for leukemia was the top fundraiser, raising $17,037. Chairman Gary Jobson in October, along with fundraisers Kathy Downs and Bob Smith who raised over $12,000. The Top Fundraising Team was the Harbor 20 fleet, raising $35,120, with Team EYC coming in second raising $22,879. A huge thank you to the 2015 sponsors, fundraisers, sailors, event partners, volunteers, and committee members that contributed to the success of the 2015 Annapolis Leukemia Cup Regatta. Funding for patient services and blood cancer treatment access and cures are underway!!
