It did not take long for the Baysox bats to wake up on Thursday morning in New Hampshire after being shutout in Wednesday’s loss. The Baysox scored 10 runs on a season-high 20 hits to beat the New Hampshire Fisher Cats 10-1. This was the first time the Baysox scored 10 or more runs in a victory since May 3.
The Baysox got off to a fast start against New Hampshire starter Casey Lawrence. Glynn Davis and Ozzie Martinez opened the game with back-to-back singles, and then executed a successful double steal. Rossmel Perez then scored Davis with an RBI groundout and Brandon Snyder plated Martinez with a single to right field. After a Garabez Rosa double to center field, Quincy Latimore knocked in two more runs with a single to left-center field, giving the Baysox a 4-0 lead before the defense even took the field.
The runs kept coming in the top of the fourth inning as Davis hit a one-out double down the left field line and later scored on a Perez RBI single to make the score 5-0.
The fifth inning started much like the first for the Baysox. Rosa and Latimore led off with back-to-back singles and Austin Wynns knocked them in with a two-RBI double to left field. After Dustin Antolin replaced Lawrence on the mound and walked Sharlon Schoop, Ozzie Martinez had himself a two-out, two-RBI double to right-center field to make it 9-0 Baysox. Sean Halton made the game 10-0 in the sixth inning with a sacrifice fly that scored Snyder.
In the bottom of the seventh, Baysox starter Tim Berry got a quick out and then gave up a single to Kevin Nolan. Ryan Schimpf followed with a ground ball to second base, but the Baysox were unable to turn the double play. Berry walked Matt Newman, and the next batter, Jack Murphy, hit a RBI single into center field to put the Fisher Cats on the board at 10-1.
The ten runs were more than enough for Berry, who earned his first win of the season, throwing 6.2 innings and only giving up one run on three hits while striking out one and walking three. Gene Escat threw 1.1 innings of shutout baseball and Kenn Kasparek came in to throw the ninth inning, striking out one.
The Baysox (28-25) took two of three from the Fisher Cats, and now sit three and a half games back of the Altoona Curve in the Eastern League Western Division standings. The Baysox will travel to Portland for a three-game series this weekend before coming back to Bowie for a homestand beginning Tuesday, June 9.
