22nd CRAB Cup Regatta on tap

crab-logo-titleAnnapolis Yacht Club is hosting Chesapeake Region Accessible Boating (CRAB)’s twenty second annual regatta for disabled sailors on Saturday, June 20th from 10 am to 4:30 pm and Sunday, June 21st from 9:30 am
to 4:00 pm.

The Donald Backe Memorial CRAB Cup allows disabled sailors to compete in a series of eight races over two days. Four races will be held each day to determine the winning team. The racing area will be in the Annapolis Harbor and the mouth of the Severn River.

There will be four teams of racers. Each team consists of a crew of three people —a disabled skipper, a disabled first mate and an able-bodied second mate—who participate in the regatta. The able-bodied crew member does not assist in any way unless needed for safety. CRAB’s fleet of Freedom Independence 20 sailboats are modified to meet the needs of sailors with disabilities.

The first CRAB Cup was held in 1993. The CRAB Cup has been renamed The Donald Backe Memorial CRAB Cup to honor the founder of CRAB, Don Backe, who passed away in April 2013. The Donald Backe Memorial CRAB Cup Trophy will be awarded to the winning team.

CRAB, a non-profit headquartered in Annapolis, Maryland, provides sailing opportunities for people with physical and developmental disabilities.
