Catch Me If You Can up next at Annapolis Summer Garden Theatre

Catch Me 3Annapolis Summer Garden Theatre’s 50th season of “theatre under the stars” continues on Thursday, July 2 with the area premiere of Catch Me If You Can, a high-flying musical comedy based on the hit DreamWorks film and the incredible true story that inspired it. Filled with jazzy music, high-energy dance numbers, and a riveting story, the show was created by a Tony Award-winning team, with a book by Terrence McNally (The Full Monty, Ragtime) and a swinging score by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman (Hairspray).

Performances are Thursdays-Sundays at 8:30pm from July 2-25, and Wednesday, July 22. There is no show on July 4. Tickets are $22 each. For tickets and information, visit www.summergarden.com or call ASGT’s Ticket Office at 410-268-9212.

The story centers on Frank W. Abagnale, Jr.—a teenager who runs away from home in search of a glamorous life. With nothing more than his boyish charm, a big imagination, and millions of dollars in forged checks, Frank successfully poses as a pilot, a doctor, and a lawyer—living the high life and winning the girl of his dreams. But when this globe-trotting con artist catches the attention of FBI agent Carl Hanratty, Carl pursues Frank across the country to make him pay for his crimes. Along the way, the two forge an unlikely friendship and discover a surprising way to work together.

Catch Me If You Can is directed by Mark Briner, a graduate of The Johns Hopkins University, where he helped establish the student performing group the JHU Barnstormers. Mark has been active in community, regional, and dinner theatre as a performer, director, costume and set designer, and producer. His directorial credits include such varied pieces as Chess, Altar Boyz, Evita, Once on This Island, She Loves Me, Fool for Love, Vanities, and Dreamgirls, which was produced with a grant from Dreamworks Studios and named Best Musical of 2006 in numerous awards throughout the Baltimore/Washington area. An active proponent of the arts, Mark serves as a member of the Board of Directors for Tidewater Players, the Children’s Playhouse of Maryland, and is a founding board member of Winters Lane Productions.

As Mark explains, “I’m ecstatic to have the opportunity to direct Catch Me If You Can because I think it is the most exciting show to have premiered in the last decade. It’s a fast paced, song-and-dance filled journey through one of the most unbelievable true stories is this lifetime. And it features another incredible score by the incomparable team of Marc Shaiman and Scott Whitman. With amazing music, an incredible cast, and the best production team a director could ask for—and because I’m one of the first regional directors to get his hands on this amazing piece since it closed on Broadway—I predict Catch Me will be one of the most memorable evenings of musical theatre anywhere this season. This is the show you don’t want to miss!”

Founded in 1966, ASGT is an all-volunteer community theatre presenting its 50th season in 2015. New volunteers are always welcome. To get involved, e-mail [email protected].
