Quacks for Backpacks returns to Camp Letts in Edgewater, on Sunday May 31. Sponsored by the Rotary Club of South Anne Arundel County, this family-oriented event takes place from 12 -3 p.m., with proceeds benefitting the Bountiful Backpack Program.
Hunger in Anne Arundel County is unfortunately a grim reality for many needy children in the area. Nutritious meals are provided at school; however weekend meals are not covered. In an effort to sustain these children, South County Rotary launched the Bountiful Backpack Program as part of its hunger initiative. Each Friday, children are provided backpacks filled with weekend supplies of nourishing food; the backpacks are returned to school on Monday and filled again for redistribution.
Highlights of the Sunday May 31 event include popular MC Wiley Baker, introducing live music courtesy of local band The Stragglers. An assortment of delicious food will be served up hot and fresh by Adams Grill and Taphouse. Tasty deserts will be served up by Kona Ice and Kettle Corn. Yard games will include a corn toss; bubble hoops, plus Michelle Drake serving as children’s face painter; magician Michael Cox performs as Wild Willy Woo Woo; youngsters can hand-paint their own fun ducks in the decorating area. Visitors will also have an opportunity to tour actual fire-fighting equipment, courtesy of volunteers from the Woodland Beach Fire Department.
The Corporate Duck Race will take place at 1:00 p.m., followed by the Rubber Duck Fun Race at 1:30 p.m.; fun ducks can be adopted for $10 each. Additional Corporate Duck information (with registration forms) can be found at southcountyrotary.org. There is no-charge for admission, plus there’s plenty of free on-site parking. Event proceeds will benefit the Bountiful Backpack Program, sponsored by South County Rotary.
