Celebrating Annapolis Greenscape Day on April 25, over 50 volunteers came to St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Eastport to work on restoring a degraded woodland adjoining Back Creek.
Twenty USNA Midshipmen, five Master Watershed Stewards, church members and community volunteers removed English ivy from the trees. Members of 4-H picked up 10 bags of trash from the woods. Rainscaping areas were weeded and mulched. A trail was blazed for a future environmental education center.
Lead by Watershed Stewards Academy student Sandie Kirkland, this was the second workday held at St. Luke’s as part of a habitat restoration project. The site adjoins the acreage where a regenerative stormwater conveyance system will be built to aid in Bay cleanup. Jodie Shivery of Ecologically Sound Landscapes provided training on invasive removal and the importance of native plants for ecosystem health.
