Students from the Human Services Club at Anne Arundel Community College organized a campus-wide donation drive to benefit Ruth’s Miracle Group Home, a home for at-risk women in Calvert County who are experiencing transitions in their lives and need a safe place to stay.

The drive, which ran from early April through May 8, culminates with delivery of the collected goods to the home on May 9 by Human Services club members and will be presented to the residents as gifts.

The idea for donations came from Ashley Auerbach, who lives in Calvert County and was interning at Ruth’s Miracle Group Home as part of a Human Services course. Professor Nicole R. Williams, Ph.D., coordinator of AACC’s Human Services programs, is also the faculty advisor for the club. She said the club embraced the home as a special project. Auerbach interviewed the women at the home to see what products and types of clothing they could use as they move to the next phase of their lives and distributed that information to the college community.

Women come to Ruth’s Miracle Group Home with a variety of needs, ranging from mental and emotional scars from physical or substance abuse, alcohol addiction or incarceration. The goal for each woman is to obtain full independence and become self-sufficient.
