aaco-logo-colorAnne Arundel County Office of Planning and Zoning, Transportation Division has completed a series of Sidewalk/ADA Accessibility Corridor Studies to evaluate the safe movement of pedestrians and bicyclists within five major transportation corridors in the county.

The purpose of the studies was to identify and evaluate existing sidewalks/bicycle friendly amenities throughout each of the corridors.  Likewise, areas where sidewalks/bikeways are currently not present were identified and evaluated for need based on the presence of existing pedestrian/bicycle traffic and/or generators, designated crossings, the presence of transit service, environmental constraints, as well as accommodating right-of-way and/or topography concerns.

The following is a list of the road segments that were studied:

1.    MD 176 (Dorsey Road) from MD 648 (Baltimore-Annapolis Boulevard) to Abraham Road;

2.    MD Route 2 (Ritchie Highway) from the Anne Arundel Community College (Arnold Campus) to the Department of Motor Vehicles in Glen Burnie;

3.    MD Route 170 (Telegraph Road) from MD Route 677 (Odenton Road) to MD Route 2 (Ritchie Highway);

4.    MD Route 177 (Mountain Road) from MD Route 2 (Ritchie Highway) to Pinehurst Road/ Downs Memorial Park;

5.    MD Route 648 (Baltimore-Annapolis Boulevard) from MD Route 168 (Nursery Road) to Jones Station Road.

A recommended Priority List is established with each corridor study in conjunction with the recommendations of the 2010 Transit Development Plan and the 2013 Pedestrian/Bicycle Master Plan Update. These study findings were instrumental in getting both new and replacement sidewalk improvements from the Maryland State Highway Administration for portions along MD Route 2 and MD Route 648 in recent years.
