The Annapolis & Anne Arundel County Conference and Visitors Bureau (AAACCVB) wants to make it easy for individuals to enjoy the many exciting events and activities that will be taking place in Annapolis and the Chesapeake Bay throughout June 2015. The Annapolis to Newport race is one of the most historic and well-known of the U.S. East Coast blue water races. Linking two seaports dating from our nation’s birth, the race provides a contrast between our nation’s largest estuary, the Chesapeake Bay, and the Atlantic Ocean. The course heads south for 120 miles from Annapolis to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, then east to the Chesapeake Light, and northeast to Newport . This year marks the 35th running of the 475-mile biennial race.

A highlight of this month’s opening will be a 2:30 p.m. lecture on the original French frigate L’ Hermione that brought the Marquis de Lafayette to the United States during the Revolutionary War. An exact replica of the Hermione is scheduled to visit Annapolis June 15-17. Other events of the day include films, walking tours and exhibits related to the 1783-1787 Treaty of Paris period.

McBride Gallery began with a small group of fewer than 20 artists at 117 Main Street. In the summer of 1990, it moved into a seven- room former colonial home with three fireplaces at 215 Main Street. The gallery now exhibits the works of more than 70 painters, sculptors, printmakers and potters from the Mid-Atlantic States and beyond. The 35th Anniversary Show will feature works by all 70 artists and celebrate their role and the Annapolis community’s role over the past 35 years of the gallery’s history.

French Frigate Hermione Visits Annapolis

An exact replica of the French frigate L’Hermione will dock in Annapolis for onboard and pier-side visits. Under the command of Louis-Rene de Latouche, The original L’Hermione transported the Marquis de Lafayette to the United States during the Revolutionary War. The vessel played a critical role in battling Cornwallis at Yorktown and helped France become an important ally to the United States. The Hermione visit to Annapolis is part of the vessel’s summer tour to seven U.S. States and Nova Scotia.

After cycling 3000+ miles through twelve states, Over 300 elite cyclists from all over the world are expected to cross the finish line at City Dock. The solo and team races start on June 16 and the relay team race starts on June 20 in Oceanside, California. Athletes have just nine days to complete the course. To beat the running clock, they must travel at least 300 miles a day on less than four hours of sleep. Thirty-percent longer than Tour de France, RAAM is considered to be the most grueling race in the world. 2015 will be the 34th anniversary of RAAM. The race is one of the longest continuously run bicycle races in America. Come and cheer for these amazing athletes as they complete a monumental journey! 2015 marks the 34th year for the event – making it one of America’s longest continuously running cycling events.
