Dance Theatre of Harlem to feature Annapolis man in June performance

Dance Theatre of Harlem

Dance Theatre of HarlemThe world-renowned Dance Theatre of Harlem performs live in Baltimore, MD on Saturday, June 20, 2015 at 8:00 p.m., at the Carl J. Murphy Fine Arts Center at Morgan State University. The performance is co-presented by the Reginald F. Lewis Museum and Murphy Fine Arts Center. This special performance is in conjunction with the exhibition Dance Theatre of Harlem: 40 Years of Firsts, on display at the Reginald F. Lewis Museum, and is DTH’s only headlining Mid-Atlantic appearance in 2015.

The June 20th performance features “Coming Together,” a new addition to the company’s repertoire, by distinguished choreographer Nacho Duato.

Three Maryland natives are among the DTH performers: Da’Von Doane (Salisbury), Keenan English (Randallstown), and Anthony Javier Savoy (Annapolis). DTH’s ballet master Keith Saunders is also a Baltimore native.

Arthur Mitchell founded DTH in 1969 in reaction to the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., as his way to give back to his community. Its start during a time of social turmoil and tragedy makes the dance company still poignantly relevant today. In addition to performing all over the world, DTH has stayed rooted in its social mission of reaching young people with powerful programs that foster personal growth.

“We are excited to welcome Dance Theatre of Harlem to Maryland and are especially proud of the native Marylanders in the company. They follow a long tradition of African Americans in this state who have honed their craft and achieved the pinnacle of success in their field. We are delighted to offer audiences a chance to see the company in performance, as a complement to our exhibition about the important place they occupy in African American history. Their start as a reaction to Dr. King’s assassination is inspirational in these current times. We thank the Murphy Fine Arts Center at Morgan State University for the opportunity to partner and showcase this wonderful company,” said A. Skipp Sanders, Executive Director of the Reginald F. Lewis Museum.

The inspirational story of DTH, as well as its social and artistic impact, is brought to life in the Dance Theatre of Harlem: 40 Years of Firsts exhibition, which includes costumes, historical photographs, set pieces and video excerpts. In addition to the costumes and staged ballets, the exhibition includes artifacts such as original tour programs, letters from choreographers and dignitaries, magazine articles, design bibles, and original tour posters. The exhibition is on display at the Reginald F. Lewis Museum through Sunday, August 30, 2015.
