The Annapolis & Anne Arundel County Conference and Visitors Bureau (AAACCVB), Maryland State Senator John Astle, Anne Arundel County Executive Steve Schuh, Annapolis Mayor Mike Pantelides and U.S. Travel Association Executive Vice President Gary Oster will jointly announce a major new AAACCVB tourism initiative during a Travel and Tourism Day celebration at Rams Head On Stage at 33 West Street in Annapolis on Wednesday, May 6, from 11:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Other invited guests include Maryland Governor Larry Hogan.
The announcement will be made before an audience of AAACCVB members and partners, tourism industry leaders and elected officials gathered to celebrate the positive impact travel and tourism has on the local economy. The May 6 event serves as the focal point of the AAACCVB’s National Travel and Tourism Week (May 2-10) observance.
AAACCVB President & CEO Connie Del Signore says while her organization celebrates past tourism successes, it will continue its time proven practice of implementing projects designed to yield long-term benefits for the community. The travel and tourism industry brought more than 2.6 million overnight visitors and more than $3.3 million to the local economy in 2013 (latest figures available from a Tourism Economics study). The industry also directly employed 34,737 individuals and accounted for $932.3 million in wages in Annapolis and Anne Arundel County in 2014 (latest figures available from a Choice Communications Systems study).
According to Del Signore, “As stewards of the ‘goose that laid the golden egg,’ the AAACCVB is tasked with the self-imposed responsibility of keeping the travel and tourism pipeline filled with programs and initiatives destined to yield significant dividends for years to come. The initiative we launch on May 6 is designed to do just that.”
National Travel and Tourism Week champions the power of the travel and tourism industry. The annual event was established by a congressional resolution in 1983 and was first celebrated the following year.
