Maryland Comptroller Peter Franchot will give the commencement address at Anne Arundel Community College’s 53rd Commencement at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 21, under a big tent on the athletic practice fields on the Arnold campus.
Franchot was elected as Maryland’s 33rd comptroller in 2006 and was re-elected to a third term in November 2014. Since he took office, he has made it easier for Maryland residents to file taxes, protected consumers from fraudulent tax preparers and ensured that the majority of taxpayers receive refunds within three business days. His office also has collected nearly $4 billion in unpaid taxes. Under his leadership, the Maryland Comptroller’s Office has received national acclaim as the most efficient in the nation.
As the state’s chief fiscal officer, Franchot is a member of the state’s Board of Public Works, where he has one of three votes over funding for state contracts. In that role, he serves as an independent fiscal watchdog and works hard to prevent wasteful spending and to secure the best deal possible for the taxpayers. As vice chairman of the Maryland Retirement and Pension System, he has worked with his fellow trustees to safeguard the hard-earned financial security of the state’s public workforce. He also is a member of the State’s Capital Debt Affordability Committee, on which he has led the fight against excessive and unsustainable public borrowing
Comptroller Franchot attended Amherst College (B.A., 1973) and Northeastern School of Law (J.D., 1978). Prior to serving as comptroller, he was elected to five terms in the House of Delegates, where he served on the Appropriations Committee and chaired the Subcommittee on Transportation and the Environment. He served in the United States Army from 1968 to 1970. Peter and his wife, Anne Maher, live in Takoma Park, where they raised their two children, Abigail and Nick.
