The Baysox used a five run eighth inning to come from three runs down and beat the Erie SeaWolves 10-8 Sunday afternoon. Bowie trailed by as many as five runs in the fourth inning, but were not to be denied as they narrowly avoided the four-game home sweep.
Trailing 5-0 early in the game, the Baysox tied the game 5-5 in the sixth inning before quickly falling behind again the following half inning. However, the Baysox were able to battle back a second time with five runs on four hits and three walks in the eighth inning to secure the lead for good.
Erie started the game with a bang as Wynton Bernard led off the top of the first inning with a solo home run to left field off Baysox starter Tim Berry. Later in the inning, Josh Prince scored from second base on a two-out single from James Robbins to give the SeaWolves a 2-0 lead.
The SeaWolves added to the lead in the top of the second inning with a two out rally. Connor Harrell drew a one-out walk and later scored on a Wynton Bernard two-out double to left field. Bernard stole third base and then scored on a Prince single to left field to make the score 4-0.
Erie added to the lead again in the top of the fourth inning with the help of a Baysox error. Harrell hit a lead-off double and moved to third base on a flyout. Bernard then reached on a missed catch error by first baseman Mike McDade that allowed Harrell to score and give the SeaWolves a 5-0 lead.
The Baysox got one run back in the bottom half of the inning against Erie starter Warwick Saupold. Mike Yastrzemski hit a lead-off double to left field and Derrik Gibson followed with an RBI single to center field to made the score 5-1.
Bowie scored again in a wild bottom of the fifth inning to make the score 5-2. Michael Burgess drew a one-out walk and then scored from first on a Sharlon Schoop single to right field and throwing error by Erie’s Jeff McVaney. Yastrzemski then reached on a fielding error by first baseman James Robbins that moved Schoop to third base. With Gibson batting, Yastrzemski was caught stealing second and Schoop was later thrown out trying to advance home when the ball got away from the catcher for the final out of the inning.
The Baysox rallied to tie the game 5-5 in the bottom of the sixth inning. Sean Halton hit a one-out double to center field and Brennan Smith then replaced Saupold on the mound. Smith quickly threw a wild pitch that moved Halton to third base before walking McDade. Rossmel Perez followed with a sacrifice fly to plate the first run and Glynn Davis then singled to center field to put the tying run on first base. Jason Esposito tied the game with a two-out double to left field that scored both McDade and Davis.
Erie came right back to retake the lead in the top of the seventh inning against Baysox reliever Kenn Kasparek. Bernard hit a lead-off single to right field and moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt before scoring on a Prince double to left field. Prince then scored on a McVaney single to center field to make the score 7-5.
The SeaWolves added to the lead in the top of the eighth inning against reliever Mychal Givens. Miguel Gonzalez hit a lead-off double to right field and moved to third base on a wild pitch before scoring on a two-out Harold Castro single to right field to make the score 8-5.
Bowie came roaring back with a five-run eighth inning to take the first lead of the game. Erie reliever Brennan Smith surrendered a single and two walks to load the bases before being replaced by Omar Duran on the mound. With two outs, Duran walked in the first run of the inning followed by a Schoop 2-RBI single to right-center field. Yastrzemski gave the Baysox the lead with a single to left-center field and Gibson capped off the scoring with another RBI single to make the final score 10-8.
Berry pitched five innings and allowed five runs (four earned) on eight hits while striking out three and walking three in a no decision. Kasparek pitched two innings and allowed two runs on three hits while striking out three. Givens earned his first Double-A win, pitching the final two innings and allowing one run on two hits while striking out three.
RHP Elih Villanueva (1-1, 2.53) is scheduled to start for the Baysox Monday as the team begins a two-game home series against the Richmond Flying Squirrels. He will be opposed by RHP Joe Biagini (0-0, 0.00).
