MINI BOOK FAIR

Tuesday, February 24 from 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.

February’s sale will feature romance novels! Stop by the center and browse our selection of books for sale, all at very reasonable prices!

VAN TRIP: BANNEKER-DOUGLASS MUSEUM AND LUNCH AT BUDDY’S CRABS AND RIBS

Tuesday, February 17 from 10:00 a.m.-1:45 p.m.

A Department of Aging and Disabilities van will take participants to the Banneker-Douglas Museum for a special exhibit entitled “Hometown Team Sports—Unsung Heroes” which portrays athletes from Maryland’s historically black colleges. After the museum, enjoy lunch at Buddy’s Crabs and Ribs in Annapolis. Participants are responsible for the cost of their meal and tip. Space on the van is limited.

Varicose Veins: Not a cosmetic problem

Wednesday, Feb. 18 from 10:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m.

Varicose Veins are often characterized as a cosmetic problem but they can actually be a sign of an underlying disorder of the circulatory system called venous insufficiency. Dr. Liao, a board certified General Surgeon with Maryland Vein Professionals, specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of this disease that can lead to swelling, pain, fatigue and restless legs. He will be offering free screenings after his short presentation.

FINANCIAL RETIREMENT WORKSHOP

Wednesday, February 18-Wednesday, April 1 from 10:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m.

This six-week, comprehensive workshop will cover all aspects of financial planning to manage retirement income and investment strategies. You will learn key principles of saving and investing, and learn specific strategies to help you manage your financial retirement. Emphasis will be placed on the fees, risks, cost and potential abuses of seniors. Presented by Financial Advisor Neal Chalkley of Edward Jones. Sign up by Friday, February 13.

CARING CANINES

Caring Canines is a pet therapy program created by Dogwood Acres Pet Retreat. They provide volunteer pet therapy teams who want to make a difference in someone’s life by sharing their pet’s loving presence. Join us today for a visit from Caring Canines and get to meet some of their volunteers and pets.

Movie on the big screen: LINCOLN

Monday, February 23 at 12:30 p.m.

Director Steven Spielberg takes on the towering legacy of Abraham Lincoln, focusing on his stewardship of the Union during the Civil War years. The biographical saga also reveals the conflicts within Lincoln’s cabinet regarding the war and abolition. Starring Daniel Day-Lewis as President Lincoln and Sally Field as Mary Todd Lincoln.

Funeral planning is not an easy topic to think about and discuss with family and friends; however, everyone should. This presentation provides guidance to start planning for a funeral or cremation experience commemorating your life. Ryan Helfenbein, columnist for Outlook by the Bay magazine, will answer some commonly asked questions, such as: How do I plan a funeral, memorial service or cremation? Are there considerations if I am a veteran or spouse of one? What are my funding options for advanced planning? Join us for some refreshments and learn more.

LOVESTORY

Wednesday, Feb. 25 from 1:00 p.m.-2:00 p.m.

T.A. and D are the powerhouse vocal entertainment duo, Lovestory. Their show includes the jazz hits of Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Billie Holiday, and Ella Fitzgerald along with your favorite Motown and soul hits from the 50′s, 60′s, and 70′s.  With an emphasis on songs that celebrate life and love, Lovestory fills the room with the energy of love.

A Department of Aging and Disabilities van will take center members to the Harbour Center and Amish Market in Annapolis. Space on the van is limited. Sign up by Friday, February 20.  

South County Senior Center is one of seven senior centers operated by Anne Arundel County Department of Aging and Disabilities.
