Midshipman found dead in room on Yard

USNASealEye On Annapolis has learned that a 2nd Class Midshipman (Class of 2016) in the 16th Company at the United States Naval Academy died Thursday night in Bancroft Hall. Details surrounding the death have not been released by the Academy, but we learned that the Midshipman was found deceased by his roommate late Thursday evening. The Midshipman was a classmate of Hans Loewen who passed away last year. We were able to obtain a statement from the Academy early this morning.

Official statement from the USNA:

The Naval Academy is deeply saddened to confirm that Midshipman Second Class (junior) Rolando Amador was found dead in his room in Bancroft Hall Thursday night at approximately 9 p.m.  The circumstances surrounding this death are currently under investigation.  Midshipman Amador was from Harpswell, Maine. He was 22 years old.  He was a member of the 16th Company, a mechanical engineering major and participated in intramural sports at the academy.  He attended Naval Academy Preparatory School for a year before coming to USNA. The Midshipman Development Center, Chaplain’s Center and Chain of Command are providing grief counseling and support services to midshipman, faculty and staff.

A tragic year on the Yard

Last year saw three tragic deaths of Midshipmen at the USNA.  In February, MIDN 1st Class Max Allen died when his car went into the Severn River after an accident on the Yard. Navy Running Back, MIDN 4th Class Will McKamey died in late March after collapsing during a spring football practice. MIDN 3rd Class Hans Loewen died in a skateboarding accident on the Eastern Shore late in March as well.
