Students, faculty, staff and community members focused on helping black male students succeed are invited to attend the Fifth Annual Black Male Initiative Summit on Tuesday, Feb. 24, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Anne Arundel Community College.

The summit is free and includes dinner and a guest speaker who will discuss pathways and ideas that can aid students in reaching their academic goals. The summit will be held in the Center for Applied Learning and Technology (CALT) Room 100 on the Arnold campus, 101 College Parkway. Reservations are required by Feb. 19 and may be made by emailing [email protected] or calling 410-777-2530.

This year’s guest speaker is Ivan L. Harrell, Ph.D., vice president of Student Services at Lone Star College-Cyfair. Harrell formerly was dean of Student Success Services at AACC.

Research shows that black male students have been less successful than any other student group, but retention rates of black males have increased more than 6 percentage points since the first summit in 2011, from 38 in 2010-2011 to 44.3 percent in 2012-2013. The summit has three main goals:

• To give black male students the opportunity to interact with other black male students, faculty, staff and community members.

• To help students identify present and potential barriers to success.

• And, to show students the support programs and services that could positively impact their success.
