Annapolis Maritime Museum and AACPS sign agreement to provide environmental education

ammIn an effort to graduate environmentally literate students and meet state environmental literacy standards the Annapolis Maritime Museum (AMM) will provide high quality environmental literacy education for students pk-12 with engaging, hands-on field experiences  that are an integral part of the AACPS’s environmental literacy plan.

Goals of the partnership between AMM and AACPS include:

  • Every sixth grade student in AACPS, as part of instruction, engaged in hands-on, authentic field experiences. The Office of Environmental Literacy and Outdoor Education of AACPS has developed curriculum integrated field experiences in collaboration with Science and other content areas.
  • In partnership with the AACPS, and support from the NOAA Chesapeake Bay Office, AMM provides high quality curriculum-based education  programs to more than 1,000 public school students annually in support of  the  AACPS  Environmental Literacy and Outdoor Education Program and in accord with the Maryland Environmental Literacy Standards.
  • For the 2014-2015 School year, AMM is designated as the program provider with central responsibility for the organization, administration and execution of the sixth grade Oyster Education Program in support of the AACPS Environmental Literacy Program in four designated Middle Schools.
  • The Program curriculum, developed jointly by Annapolis Maritime Museum and the AACPS Office of Environmental Literacy, for that grade level, will focus on the oyster and its environment, including the scientific elements and ecological context of their life cycle and the broader role and impact that their harvesting and marketing has played in the culture and history of the Chesapeake Bay. The Program will include two field experiences which include a boat ride on the Severn River, planting baby oysters and meeting and talking to an authentic waterman.  AMM staff provides in-class lessons and professional development opportunities to each teacher.

“The partnership is both valuable and essential to the Museum’s commitment to connecting students to the Chesapeake Bay and creating future environmental stewards”, stated Sarah Krizek, Education Director, AMM, “and allows us to continue to expand and enhance our programs for area students”.
