The new Treaty of Paris Center at the Maryland Inn is a monthly open house that focuses on the important history that took place in Annapolis during the 1783-87 Treaty of Paris Period—the time between the end of the Revolutionary War and the Constitutional Convention—when Congress was here, Thomas Jefferson and James Monroe served as delegates, George Washington retired from the Army, the Treaty of Paris was ratified, Jefferson was appointed to serve as a minister to France, and James Madison and Alexander Hamilton led the 1786 Annapolis Convention’s call for a new Constitution. We bring these moments to life through reenactments, lectures, films, exhibits, walking tours and souvenirs.
The next session will be on Saturday, February 7 from 11:00am – 3:30pm with the theme of “Shays’s Rebellion: Why it Started, How it Ended.” This uprising began two weeks before the 1786 Annapolis Convention. The lecture will be provided by Dr. RJ Rockefeller in the Treaty of Paris Restaurant from 2:30pm – 3:30pm after lunch ends.
Our walking tours follow in the footsteps of Washington, Jefferson, Monroe, Madison and Hamilton, including a ghost tour of where Mann’s Tavern once stood. Interactive computer screens provide links to the “America’s 14 Forgotten Presidents Before George Washington” collection, part of our main exhibit.
