Gambrills businesswoman seeking Vitale’s vacant seat

AvilesGambrills businesswoman and Crofton resident, Angelette Aviles, announces her interest in applying for Delegate Cathy Vitale’s soon-to-be vacant seat. Her motivation comes from her customers, vendors, and neighbors who, while at her bakery eating desserts, openly discuss their frustration with the state’s affairs as well as their suggestions for a better Maryland. Aviles states, “after spending the last few years listening I believe it is the right time to move forward and speak on behalf of my community and make bold decisions that will help grow the state’s economy and restore confidence in Marylanders.”

Angelette is no stranger to politics. Although raised in Montgomery County, she moved to Florida in 1994 to attend college and resided there until 2009. She was one of six women and only Hispanic selected for a Republican leadership program called the Tillie Fowler Series, which prepared them for larger roles in government and politics. She immediately became a surrogate for the Hispanic Leadership Council of the Republican Party of Florida and due to her business and communications experience she became a frequent panelist on the political talk show, Florida this Week and was a respected source for commentary among various media outlets. In 2008, she received a Gubernatorial Appointment to the Board of the Early Learning Coalition in Hillsborough County, overseeing an annual budget of $80 million. The ELCHC is a state funded program for Voluntary Pre-K and School Readiness that fed into the 9th largest school district in the United States. That same year she received the Up & Comers Award by the Tampa Bay Business Journal and was also a member of NALEO (National Association of Latino Elected & Appointed Officials).

In 2009, Angelette relocated back to Maryland settling in Anne Arundel County along with her three children and husband. She commuted back and forth to wrap things up with existing clients and assist with Florida’s 2010 Senate campaign before doing a 180º; launching a new business adventure in 2011. A business that started with just cupcakes and one employee, now employs 9 people and provides various treats including 3D cakes like the Maryland Terrapin.

Angelette has quietly observed, listened, and digested the political atmosphere in Maryland long enough and is ready to take on the responsibility to represent the constituents for District 33. She states, “Some people may suggest that the Republican Central Committee should choose someone with legislative experience because there is no time to teach an appointee the ropes. Every public servant, in the history of time, comes in their first year with no experience. Being a public servant is not intended to be a job rather a representation of your community. The citizens of Maryland recently elected a governor with no legislative experience, who has never written or sponsored a bill. The public is tired of the status quo and establishment because at the end of the day what is most important is the relationships you establish and the trust you build with your constituents.”

To continue the dialogue among the community Angelette launched a Facebook page as an open “idearaiser” forum, not to complain, but to share solutions for a better and prosperous Maryland. Visit www.facebook.com/angeletteaviles
