…the land of the free and the home of the brave………

And with that 5000 seemingly sane people ran toward the frigid waters of the Chesapeake Bay yesterday afternoon at 1pm.  Some sort of religious ritual? Nope! Cult? Nope! A great cause? BINGO!

It was the 19th annual Maryland State Police Polar Bear Plunge to benefit Special Olympics Maryland.  This annual event has raised more than $20 million for the programs since the inception and this year’s goal is $2.5 million. As of this morning, nearly $1.5 million had been raised, but the even it not over by a long shot. Contributions made at the event yesterday still need to be tallied along with the money raised at the Plunge Fest.  Plunge Fest is a giant block party with live bands, merchandise, food, and a lot of fun. Rams Head is a huge sponsor and donates the beer that is sold to the nearly 15,000 attendees.  And lastly, the Cool School Plunge is happening on January 30th.

Schools across the state will plunge together and have been in a competition to raise funds for the cause. Currently, they have raised more than $100,000 of the $500,000 goal with another 6 days to go.   And Anne Arundel schools seem to be in the lead with South River High at the top of the pack.

If you are interested, there is still time to donate.

And for now, live vicariously through our images!  Eye On Annapolis plunged along with WRNR 103.1.  Photos will be forthcoming!
