Heritage Baptist Backpack Buddies received generous gift from Food Lion

Heritage Baptist ChurchThe Backpack Buddies Program at Heritage Baptist Church has received $3,000 from the Food Lion Charitable Foundation just in time to help feed local elementary students. Backpack Buddies will use the gift to purchase food for children in the program at Georgetown East and Mills/Parole Elementary Schools in Annapolis.

“This grant is a tremendous gift to our Backpack Buddies Program and will be used for the purchase of weekend supplemental food for 74 children at two schools,” said Mary Ann Fulford, Team Leader.

Backpack Buddies at Heritage Baptist Church was established in the spring of 2009. The mission of the program is to address food insecurities experienced by children in elementary school. The program currently provides supplemental food for 74 children at two public elementary schools. With this program, the children are able bring home sufficient food for seven meals for Friday, Saturday and Sunday of each week. Backpack Buddies works to not only address food insecurities, but also to improve the children’s health, attention in the classroom and overall wellbeing during these critical years of physical and mental development.

Established in 2001, the Food Lion Charitable Foundation provides financial support for programs and organizations dedicated to feeding the hungry in the communities it serves. Since its inception, the foundation has awarded more than $9 million in grants.
