ASO presents The Story of Babar: The Little Elephant

BabarPack your trunks and come along to Babar’s coronation at the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra’s Family Concert on Saturday, February 7, 2015 at 2:00pm and 3:30pm at Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts.  Jean de Brunhoff’s classic children’s book The Story of Babar: The Little Elephant will come to life in music by Francis Poulenc with narration by Theatrical Storyteller Sara Valentine, the co-founder and creative director of Really Inventive Stuff

Under the direction of Maestro José-Luis Novo, the ASO will also perform excerpts of classical favorites that similarly tell a vivid story, including Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake Suite, Bizet’s Carmen, and the famous and familiar William Tell Overture by Rossini. These concerts are designed for the entire family and include an opportunity to Meet the Musicians at 1:15pm or 4:30pm for an up-close interactive experience with ASO musicians and their instruments.

Tickets to the Family Concerts are $12 in all sections, and the performances are recommended for ages 4 and up.  Tickets are available by calling the ASO Box Office at 410-263-0907 or online at www.annapolissymphony.org.  These concerts will be presented with the generous support of the Kagan Law Group.

As a member of Really Inventive Stuff, Sara Valentine has performed family concerts with orchestras throughout North America, including Philadelphia, Saint Louis, Winnipeg, Kansas City, Richmond, Charlotte, New Haven, Princeton, Symphony in C, Richmond, Richardson, Harrisburg, and Texarkana.  In 2014, she made her international debut with the Singapore Symphony as narrator for Britten’s Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra, appearing as Ms. Symphonia Semi d’Quaver – a renowned British “orchestra-ologist” and ardent fan of Henry Purcell.

She has performed in several Beyond the Score presentations including Elgar’s The Enigmas Variations and Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony both with the Philadelphia Orchestra, and most recently Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony with the Des Moines Symphony Orchestra.

Ms. Valentine’s Regional theater credits include Philadelphia’s Arden Theatre, Delaware Theatre Company, Resident Ensemble Players, Milwaukee Repertory Theatre, and the Shakespeare festivals of North Carolina, Philadelphia, Colorado, and Maine.

She is an Assistant Professor of Theatre at Tulane University in New Orleans, and continues to develop family programming for orchestras as co-founder and creative director of Really Inventive Stuff.  She is a graduate of Ithaca College and the Professional Theatre Training Program (PTTP) at the University of Delaware.

Support for the ASO is generously provided by the Maryland State Arts Council, Arts Council of Anne Arundel County, Elizabeth Richebourg Rea, Baltimore/Annapolis Lexus Dealers, Friends of the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra, and The Helena Foundation.

The Annapolis Symphony Orchestra features 70 professional musicians who perform a variety of symphonic music for audiences of all ages.  Additionally, the non-profit organization provides educational programs through its partnerships with local schools, as well as various other community outreach efforts.
