Matthews joins CBMM as Major Gifts Officer

Jen MatthewsJennifer Matthews of Stevensville, MD has joined the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum as Major Gifts Officer. Matthews will be working closely with CBMM President Kristen Greenaway to lead several fundraising efforts, including spearheading a major campaign that coincides with the museum’s upcoming 50th anniversary.

The $20 million comprehensive campaign will help the museum meet current needs while providing a stable foundation for the future. Goals of the campaign include a new guest orientation center, facility and boatshop upgrades, new exhibitions, more on-the-water activities, and an increased endowment.

“We are thrilled to have Jen on our team,” said Greenaway. “Her development experience and passion for the Chesapeake Bay are hugely important to the museum. As we celebrate our 50th anniversary in 2015, Jen will be instrumental in helping the museum meet our aspirations into the coming years.”

Prior to joining the museum, Matthews worked for five years in fundraising for Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit organizations. She most recently served as Philanthropy Specialist with Eastern Shore Land Conservancy. Matthews graduated cum laude from St. Mary’s College of Maryland in 2009, with a major in theatre and a minor in film and media studies.

A Chestertown native, Matthews has always been connected to the Chesapeake Bay through fishing, crabbing, sailing, and wake-boarding, and remains an avid kayaker today. She plays field hockey with the Washington Field Hockey Association, and currently serves as assistant coach to The Gunston School’s varsity field hockey team. Her previous volunteer work includes career counseling at St. Mary’s College of Maryland.

In 2015, CBMM is celebrating its 50th anniversary, with a mission to preserve and explore the history, environment, and people of the Chesapeake Bay through educational, exhibition, and boat restoration programs. The museum’s campus includes a floating fleet of historic boats and 12 exhibition buildings, situated on 18 waterfront acres along the Miles River and St. Michaels’ harbor.
