Maryland’s health insurance program improves nationwide ranking

AA Department of AgingThe Maryland State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) recently jumped in its ranking from 34th to 12th out of 54 programs nationally. Michelle P. Holzer, Program Manager for SHIP at the Maryland Department of Aging, attributes the climb both to Maryland’s aging population and the very hard work of program staff and volunteers over the past year.  “I commend all of the State Health Insurance Assistance Program Coordinators and their volunteers for this tremendous improvement, very hard work, dedication, and loyalty to the beneficiaries we serve everyday,” said Ms. Holzer.

The SHIP Program at the Anne Arundel County Department of Aging and Disabilities currently serves 86,000 of Maryland’s 877,000 Medicare beneficiaries. As the senior population increases, a record number of citizens look to the SHIP Program for assistance in navigating and understanding their healthcare options. “I want to thank all of the SHIP volunteers who donate their time and talents to help the people of Anne Arundel County,” said Amy Rubino, SHIP Director at the Anne Arundel County Department of Aging and Disabilities.  “We could not achieve this level of customer service without them!”

SHIP counselors are trained to answer questions and provide accurate information regarding almost any question on health insurance coverage for the Medicare-eligible person. Counselors provide free, confidential, one-on-one assistance by appointment. SHIP educates consumers so they can choose supplemental insurance coverage wisely, and may also determine when a person with Medicare has gaps in health insurance coverage, or even when someone with Medicare has too much insurance coverage.

All Medicare beneficiaries, their families and caregivers are welcome to call the SHIP Program at 410-222-4464 with long term care insurance questions, or questions about Medicare billing issues and prescription drug help for older adults. TTY users, please call via Maryland Relay 7-1-1. All materials are available in an alternative format upon request.
