SPCA reduces fees for holiday adoptions

mossyAmericans are inundated each year by classic images of  bow-bedecked puppies or kitten-stuffed stockings, so it’s not surprising that many families bring pets home for the holidays.

‘Tis the season for shopping and saving, so the SPCA of Anne Arundel County is joining forces with national animal welfare organization Best Friends Animal Society for a special adoption promotion called “Bring joy to your world.”

Throughout the month of December, Best Friends Animal Society and animal rescue groups and shelters across the country will offer major adoption discounts and incentives to encourage shoppers to bypass the mall or online retailers and save a life by adopting their next pet.

The SPCA of Anne Arundel County has reduced the adopt fee for all cats/kittens to $25 throughout the month of December. All cats/kittens are spay or neutered, microchipped, and up to date on vaccines.

Best Friends and SPCA of Anne Arundel County encourage families to save a life this holiday season by adopting a homeless pet from their local animal shelter or rescue group, rather than buying from a breeder, pet store or online retailer.  Opening their home to a shelter pet in need means that money is diverted away from the inhumane puppy mill industry that churns out millions of puppies annually to supply pet stores and online retailers.

“Each year between 3 ½ and four million homeless pets are killed in shelters, but families and individuals who choose to adopt can help bring an end to this,” said Francis Battista, co-founder of Best Friends Animal Society. “Adoption literally saves lives and fits perfectly with the growing trend toward making socially responsible holiday choices.”

“One thing people often don’t realize is the variety of animals available through shelters and rescue groups,” said Rita Melvin, Development & Programs Manager. “Virtually every type, size, disposition and energy level of dog, cat, kitten or puppy can be adopted from a shelter or rescue organization. A good place to start is the SPCA of Anne Arundel County’s website (aacspca.org) which features animals available for adoption.

The theme for this year’s promotion is “Bring joy to your world.” Best Friends Sanctuary and over 200 No More Homeless Pets Network partners across the country will participate with reduced adoption fees for all or part of month of December. The goal is to achieve more than 5,000 adoptions of pets into loving homes.

The SPCA of Anne Arundel County is a participating member of the No More Homeless Pets® Network, a program of Best Friends Animal Society that offers help and support to animal rescue groups that save lives in their communities.
