rotary_logoIn its 1st year, this new fundraising event organized by the Rotary Club of South Anne Arundel County and sponsored by Homestead Gardens, Merrill Lynch, and Killarney House concluded on Sunday September 7th at 3pm. Nineteen charities and their sponsoring organizations were represented in the Christmas Tree decorating competition which attracted thousands of visitors over four days of exhibition from Dec 4th to Dec 7th. Visitors to the event as well as day shoppers to Homestead Gardens were treated to creative arrangements on individual trees highlighting the charity or cause associated with each entry. A list of the entries and the corresponding sponsors are listed below.

Some quotes from the event by members of the Rotary Club and the public-

“What a terrific way to highlight all of the good that goes on right here in our very own back yard.”

“This was a terrific event! It highlighted and created a greater awareness of so many charities and causes. Kids were able to get involved and help decorate, and also learn about the other charities in the process –  everyone is a winner with this one!

“We had a blast with this event and got to share the purpose of Rotary with so many new people that live right here in our community.

“We are grateful to learn about non-profits in the community that we did not know about before.  This is a great way to see those that we can support.”

The local Rotary Club is the recent awardee of the “2014 Foundation of the Year Award” presented by the Anne Arundel County Community Foundation for its work with local projects such as Lighthouse, the dictionary project as well as the Back Pack Project, which provides meals for 115 kids in the elementary Schools throughout South County on a weekly bases. The club also has international projects which help the people of Haiti and Malawi. This event was spearheaded by the clubs President Joe Van Duren of “Balanced Life Skills” and with the full support of the clubs members. With voting taking place at the exhibition itself and online a 1st place award of $1,031 was presented to the Chrysalis House and runner up awards were presented to Sarah’s House and. The design of  competition made everyone a winer as a percentage of the votes will ultimately be presented to each of the charities that participated.

“We look forward to adding many more trees to the event in 2015 and making this a local tradition for the people of Anne Arundel County.”
