AMM announces winter lecture series

ammThe Annapolis Maritime Museum has announced the 2015 Winter Lecture Series schedule.

The educational and informative series of eight (8) wintertime talks provides rich and stimulating topics from an esteemed group of lecturers’.  From Oyster Aquaculture, to NASA satellite images of our oceans, to the ‘Bridging’ of the Chesapeake, there are subjects for a diverse range of interest.

Lectures will be held Thursday evenings at 7 p.m., January 15th through March 5th. Admission is $10 per lecture and FREE for First Mate-level AMM members and above. Join at the $100 level, and admission to all 10 lectures is free, along with the benefits of membership.

Lectures take place in the Museum’s Bay Room located in the former McNasby’s Oyster Company at 723 Second Street, Annapolis, 21403.

The Annapolis Maritime Museum is a non for profit organization dedicated to educating youth and adults about the Annapolis area’s rich maritime heritage and the ecology of the Chesapeake Bay through programs, exhibits and community events.

January 15 | 7 p.m.

Bridging the Chesapeake: A ‘Fool Idea’ That United Maryland

  • From the days of the founding of the Maryland Colony, there has been a rivalry between the Eastern and Western Shores.
  • The idea of building of a Bay Bridge dates back to the mid-18th century, with the first serious studies in the 1900s.
    • Self-interests, politics and two world wars delayed bridge construction.
    • The vision and stubbornness of one man led to the building of the bridge – and to his political defeat.
    • The future of the Chesapeake – and the possibility for a third bridge – remain an open question in the 21st century.

From Obscurity to National Prominence: How John Paul Jones Got to Annapolis

Why John Paul Jones is proclaimed “Father of the US Navy” more than a quarter century after his death

  • Following a meritorious (and notorious) naval career, John Paul Jones dies alone in Paris
  • With his body lost to posterity for over a century, he is literally resurrected, thanks to President Teddy Roosevelt
  • His body is brought to the US Naval Academy as inspiration for midshipmen and as incentive for the country to seek naval greatness

The Living, Breathing Ocean: Perspectives from NASA’s Color Satellites

Scope of Presentation

Overview of NASA ocean color satellites: spacecraft and onboard sensors, command and data acquisition systems, data processing, storage and distribution

  • Ocean  data applications in a nutshell: carbon cycle and the importance of marine phytoplankton, climate variability (i.e., El Niño), red tides (harmful algal blooms), fisheries, land-ocean surface temperatures (beyond ocean color) and climate extremes
  • A satellite10-year animation of our living, breathing planet – land vegetation and ocean phytoplankton, consumers of atmospheric carbon and oxygen producers

  • Oysters as a sustainable choice versus other seafoods
