County Executive Steve Schuh today announced his intention to recommend to the Maryland Secretary of Human Resources the appointment of Carnitra White as Anne Arundel County Director of Social Services.

“Carnitra is a skilled professional who will work hard to ensure the best services for our citizens,” said Schuh. “Her unrivaled passion and skill make her a great addition to county government.”

White is currently Acting Deputy Secretary of Programs at the Maryland Department of Human Resources (DHR), where she oversees all of the program areas for the state. She began her career at DHR in 1993 as a Purchase of Care (POC) worker at Baltimore City DSS. She was formerly the Special Assistant to the Deputy Secretary of Programs and has also served as the manager of the Office of Strategic Management at the Baltimore City Department of Social Services.

White has a bachelor’s degree in communications from the College of Notre Dame of Maryland and a master’s degree in social work from the University of Maryland. She resides in Baltimore and is active with numerous community and social organizations

The process of appointing the Director of Social Services is primarily the responsibility of the State Department of Human Resources and requires the consent of the Anne Arundel County Executive.

The selection process commenced several months ago with the participation of the Neuman administration and involved a series of interviews with prospective candidates. White was the lead candidate to emerge from the process and was supported for the appointment by preceding County Executive Laura Neuman.

Until the appointment of White is finalized, current Interim Director Sharon Hargrove will continue with her service to the county.
