County Executive-elect Steve Schuh today named Alan R. Friedman and former Maryland Delegate James J. King as chairmen to the Schuh transition team.

“Both Alan and James understand the needs of Anne Arundel County,” said Schuh. “I’m thrilled they’ve agreed to help me put a team into place to make Anne Arundel County the best place to live, work and start a business in Maryland.”

“Over the next few weeks, I’ll be announcing more members to the transition team, each of whom will examine all aspects of county government from top to bottom,” added Schuh.

The transition committees will focus on building upon the work of the Commission on Excellence, a citizen group established to conduct a top-to-bottom review of Anne Arundel County government operations.

As transition team leaders, Friedman and King will work with the county executive-elect and make recommendations regarding policy, government reform, and executive appointments.

Alan R. Friedman, an Annapolis resident for over 30 years, has extensive experience serving in governmental positions both locally and overseas. He previously served in a series of senior positions in the office of former Governor Robert L. Ehrlich, Jr., focusing on agency reorganization, policy initiatives and legislative relations.

Prior to joining the Governor’s Office, Friedman spent three years living in the former Soviet Union. He served as a Rule of Law Liaison for the American Bar Association and as a consultant to the World Bank’s Judicial Reform Project.

Most recently, Friedman served as the Director of Governmental Relations for Anne Arundel County, a position which found him working closely with elected officials in the County Council and the Maryland General Assembly on land use, public safety, environment, and education issues. He holds a BA with High Honors from the University of Maryland, College Park, and a Juris Doctor from the University of Maryland Law School.

James J. King represented District 33A in Anne Arundel County in the Maryland House of Delegates from 2007 until 2011. While serving in the House of Delegates, he was a member of the Economic Matters Committee, the Joint Committee on Base Realignment and Closure, and the Joint Committee on Unemployment Insurance Oversight.

King owns and operates several businesses and a management company in the Maryland and Virginia region with over 400 employees. He has served as a Board Member for numerous organizations including the Restaurant Association of Maryland, Gambrills Crossroads Business Organization, The Connor Cares Foundation, The Anne Arundel County Business Roundtable, and the United Way.

County Executive-elect Steve Schuh was elected Anne Arundel County Executive on Tuesday, November 4, and will be sworn into office on December 1.
