2014 Disability Awareness Day (DAD) on October 25 at Westfield Annapolis Mall featured information on disability issues, interactive exhibits and live entertainment.  Businesses or organizations that provide employment or other accommodations for individuals with disabilities were honored with Executive Citations.

The Anne Arundel County Commission on Disability Issues recognized Chesapeake Region Accessible Boating (CRAB), an organization that has demonstrated a long-standing commitment to improving the quality of life for individuals with disabilities, with the top honor, the 2014 DAD Award.  CRAB also received a citation from County Executive Laura Neuman, and was congratulated by Mayor Mike Pantelides and County Councilman Chris Trumbauer.  CRAB is a non-profit organization founded by the late Donald E. Backe in 1991.  CRAB is dedicated to making the recreational, educational, and therapeutic benefits of sailing and the freedom it provides, a reality for physically and/or developmentally challenged individuals and their families regardless of their financial circumstances.  CRAB strives to foster a lifelong love of sailing among its program participants.

“I congratulate CRAB and all the individuals and organizations that make a difference in the lives of individuals with disabilities,” said Pam Jordan, Director, Department of Aging and Disabilities.  Disability Awareness Day has evolved into one of the Department’s largest events that celebrates the abilities in our community—an event made possible by the dedicated members of the Commission on Disability Issues.”

The public also visited with over 25 exhibitors who provide services to individuals with disabilities.  Garland Cox and students from the Harbour School provided entertainment, and Fidos For Freedom performed a demonstration.
