The Hammond-Harwood House Board of Trustees, in the heart of historic Annapolis, announces the retirement of Carter Lively, Executive Director for the past 15 years. Carter has served longer than any other house museum executive director in Annapolis. He is from Portsmouth, Virginia and studied history at James Madison University. Before coming to Annapolis Carter was at Liberty Hall Historic Site in Frankfort, Kentucky.

Carter’s legacy at the museum is twofold, one scholarly and one “bricks and mortar”. In his research on the house he made the link between the architect William Buckland’s design for the Hammond-Harwood House and the 16th century Italian architect Andrea Palladio’s design for the Villa Pisani in Montagnana, Italy.

In the ‘bricks and mortar category Carter persevered to secure funding for the 10 year long roof re-slating and structural strengthening project of our 240 year old National Historic Landmark. The funding came from the State of Maryland, the federal Save America’s Treasure’s Program, and the multitude of generous friends of the Hammond-Harwood House. This project was completed this month. In addition, Carter worked to find aid to install a new heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system, supervised painting – in stages – of the exterior of the entire museum and, earlier this year, arranged for major repairs to the front steps. For this repair he found a supply of matching stone from a source of Aquia stone cast aside from a project at the White House during the Truman reconstruction. Carter arranged to have the old stone re-sculpted to repair the steps.

The mission of the Hammond-Harwood House Association is to preserve this rare example of an eighteenth century Anglo-Palladian house, with its collection of fine and decorative arts, for public education and enjoyment. Carter understood the mission well and upheld it with great integrity. We all wish this fine Southern Gentleman a good retirement in his home state of Virginia.

The board of Trustees has formed a search committee for a new director.
