MitchelleTwo former District 30 delegates, a Republican and a Democrat, have both endorsed Mitchelle Stephenson for delegate in the newly-drawn South County District 30B.

Former Del. Phil Bissett, of Edgewater, a Republican who represented District 30 residents from 1991 to 1999 and former Del. Virginia Clagett,  a Democrat from West River who represented District 30 in the General Assembly between 1995 and 2011, endorsed Stephenson in early October.

In backing Stephenson, Bissett said: “As a voter and former elected official, I’m tired of all the political bickering. I’m looking for an independent voice.”

Stephenson, an education advocate for the past dozen years, co-owns the SouthRiverSource.com news website, which covers Southern Anne Arundel County. She is the founding editor of Edgewater Patch (2010-2013) and covered South County as a columnist and staff writer for the Capital newspaper (2007-2010).

“Mitchelle will be a strong advocate for the environment, schools and citizens from all walks of life,” Clagett said. “She has a proven track record in this community.”

Stephenson is a current appointee to the Superintendent of Schools’ Parental Involvement Advisory Committee (through 2016). She hosts a TV show on parental involvement, “Parent’s Corner” on AACPS-TV. She is a facilitator for The Bully Project Maryland, presenting free workshops to parents and parent groups to help them help their children navigate bullying behaviors online and on social media.

In 2011, Stephenson chaired the South River cluster redistricting committee. She has also served in various roles in local, county and state PTA—the largest advocacy group representing children and teachers in the state of Maryland.

“When parents ask for help, I don’t ask their party affiliation before saying ‘yes,’” Stephenson said. “That is the kind of work ethic I will bring to the job of delegate. Once elected, a delegate represents ALL of the people of the district.”

Stephenson said that she is proud of the bi-partisan backing she has received from the South County community.
