Drawing on a decades old rivalry the Maritime Republic of Eastport and the City of Annapolis will once again support local charities and bring visitors and residents downtown to witness the longest across the water tug-of-war featuring a 1700-foot rope and hundreds of tuggers. At City Hall tonight the MRE declared “war” on the City of Annapolis and the City was defended by a band of young warriors.

More than 1,000 plus spectators are expected on the Annapolis and Eastport sides of the tug.  Annapolis residents and friends will gather at the Susan Campbell Park at City Dock while the Maritime Republic of Eastport residents and guests will gather at 2nd Street along the water. It is expected that a combined 10-14 tug teams of 33 tuggers each will participate in this annual charity event. Severn Savings Bank is one of the lead sponsors of this event, and tonight presented a check to MainStreets Annapolis Partnership to support the defense of the City!

“The Tug of War is the quintessential community event and Severn Savings Bank is the quintessential community bank,” says Alan Hyatt, President and CEO of Severn Savings Bank. “This is a perfect opportunity for us to continue to show our support for the local retailers and non-profits in our backyard. We look forward to everyone coming out to cheer on Team Severn and the other participants at this fun family friendly event.”

The 2014 Tug of War will take place on Saturday, November 8th and festivities kick off at 10 am with the tugs beginning at 12 noon. A series of tugs across the water will take place until about 2:00 pm and will include a Navy, Annapolis Police, Severn Savings Bank, Bar and possible Porsche tug team. Festivities are expected to continue until around 3 pm and will include special Annapolis retailers’ vendor festival as well local bands.

“This is an annual tradition which really brings out the local community and encourages guests and residents to come downtown and participate in the festivities,” said Doug Smith, Commodore of the Mainstreets Annapolis Partnership tug efforts. “All of Annapolis loves this great Tug of War, especially when Annapolis wins! The support of Severn Savings Bank to our efforts is vital, and we thank our local community bank for their support of this local community event!”

This year, the Eastport side will have a Chili Cook-off, while the Annapolis side will host a festival of retail vendors. City of Annapolis festival vendors will include Lilac Bijoux, Brown Eyed Girl, Kokopelli, Wimsey Cove, Stan and Joe’s, Iron Rooster, and Red, Red Wine Bar among others. Local bands — including Battle of the Bands Winner Chasing Verity, the Bumpin Uglies and Aural Disturbance will perform at City Dock in Annapolis to spur the tuggers on.

Tuggers are wanted on both sides of the creek!
