Members of the Naval Academy Midshipmen Action Group (MAG) have collected thousands of pounds of non-perishable food for this year’s Harvest for the Hungry: Kids Helping Kids campaign. This Thursday midshipmen will load the final truck of food donations collected by MAG at 12:50 p.m.
This is the sixth year in a row MAG has partnered with the Anne Arundel Food Bank and Anne Arundel Public Schools for the campaign. Last year the U.S. Naval Academy donated a record 61,000 pounds of food and was recognized by the Anne Arundel County Board of Education for their donation.
“Every year, the Midshipman Action Group and the Naval Academy Chaplains respond to the community’s needs though food bank donations to the Harvest for the Hungry Campaign,” said Miriam Stanicic, Naval Academy director of community relations. “This year, the collective yield from the Naval Academy’s outreach groups will be as substantive as in past years, making positive impacts in food pantries an immediate reality to our neighbors in need.”
MAG members will participate in numerous local volunteer and community service programs throughout the upcoming spring semester. During the previous academic year, they logged 24,000 hours participating in community service projects locally and throughout the country.
Established in 1992 as a community relations program for and by the Brigade of Midshipmen, MAG currently offers a variety of educational, environmental and social service volunteer projects in coordination with community partners from the Annapolis, Baltimore and Washington D.C. areas, as well as regional and national partners. MAG prepares midshipmen for future service by encouraging peer leadership, teamwork, character development, morale, selflessness and goodwill towards others.
