Marnie BreckenridgeThe 2014-2015 season is a very special one for Live Arts Maryland. Music Director J. Ernest Green celebrates his 30th anniversary at the podium. To open this special season, Mr. Green, the Annapolis Chorale and the Annapolis Chamber Orchestra perform Carl Orff’s hugely popular “Carmina Burana” on Saturday, October 11, at 8 p.m.   “Carmina Burana” is a tour de force for chorus and orchestra. Because it’s written for a big chorus, a children’s chorus, three to six soloists, an orchestra and a huge percussion battery, it seemed like the perfect piece to open the new theater at Maryland Hall. We’ll give the new acoustics a workout,” says Mr. Green. This is the first public concert  in the newly renovated Maryland Hall auditorium.

Parts of Carmina Burana are very familiar because they have been featured in commercials and movies for more than 40 years, most recently in an ad from the Hershey company. “Carmina Burana” literally means Songs of Beuren and includes bawdy, irreverent, and satirical poems and dramatic texts written in the 11th to 13th century. The songs were discovered 1803 in a Benedictine monastery in Bavaria and, in 1936, Orff set 24 of them to music. Joining the Chorale for this performance are soprano Marnie Breckenridge, tenor Justin Berkowitz, and baritones David Murray and Jason Hentrich.   Also performing in this concert are young singers from the Bates Middle School Performing Arts Choruses under the direction of Penny Renoll.

Adult single tickets for this one-night-only concert start at $32 and are available at the Maryland Hall Box Office by calling 410-280-5640 or online at www.liveartsmaryland.org.  The Student Rush ticket program is active for this concert. Students over 18 with valid IDs may visit the box office a half-hour before curtain to receive a free ticket. Students under 18 do not need a valid ID.
