Jacqueline Thoms, soprano and St. John’s College registrar, and Sophia Dillard, pianist and St. John’s senior, will perform four songs by Shakespearean scholar Richard Simpson (1820-1876) based on Shakespeare’s sonnets. The recital, which is free and open to the public, will be held in the Hodson Room in Mellon Hall on Wednesday, November 5 from noon to1 p.m.
Following the recital, Hollis Thoms, researcher and composer, and Tom May, St. John’s tutor, will give a talk on “Shakespearean Education at St. John’s College, 1870-1880” from 3 to 4 p.m. in the Greenfield Library’s Lilian Vanous Nutt Room. An exhibition tracing the beginning of Shakespeare scholarship at St. John’s is on view at the Nutt Room through December 14. The exhibit features items on loan from the United States Naval Academy and the University of North Carolina, several items from Hollis Thoms’ collection, and books and archival materials from the Greenfield Library’s collection. Admission to the events is free and tickets are not required.
