Learn to recognize exploited children at AACC seminar

aaccLearn the signs that indicate a child or teen may be a victim of human trafficking, sexual abuse, emotional abuse or trauma at the Nov. 12 Engaged Scholar Series continuing education and professional development seminar offered by the Homeland Security and Criminal Justice Institute at Anne Arundel Community College.

The seminar, which includes breakfast, meets from 9 a.m. to noon in the Cade Center for Fine Arts Room 219 on AACC’s Arnold campus, 101 College Parkway. To register for “Exploited Children” (CNS 513-901), visit www.aacc.edu/engagedscholarseries. The cost is $45 and participants receive .3 continuing education units toward professional development.

Speakers Adam C. Rosenberg, Esq., executive director of the Baltimore Child Abuse Center, and Supervisory Special Agent Michael J. Mizer, FBI Baltimore Division, Maryland Child Exploitation Task Force, will discuss social, cognitive, emotional and psychological symptoms that children and teens may exhibit when they are experiencing or have experienced abuse or trauma. They also will suggest legal ways to ensure safety of the child.

AACC’s Homeland Security and Criminal Justice Institute offers Engaged Scholar Series seminars throughout each semester. Two additional fall seminars – both free – are “Prescription Drugs: Killing Our Children Softly,” featuring A. Keith Adkins, former Drug Enforcement Agency Special Agent, from noon to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15, in the Center for Applied Learning and Technology (CALT) Room 107; and “ISIS, ISIL: The Road Map to the Future,” featuring Robert Scheina, Ph.D., author of “American Mercenaries and Soldiers of Fortune,” at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 16, in the Florestano Building Room 101. Both men also teach courses in the Homeland Security and Criminal Justice curriculum at AACC.
