The Board of Trustees of the Annapolis Opera Company, now entering its 42nd season bringing live opera to our community, is pleased to announce that Kathy Swekel has been named General Manager of the Company effective September 15, 2014. Ms. Swekel will provide professional leadership to take the organization into the future and match the artistic professionalism for which Annapolis Opera has long been known.  Together with Artistic Director, Ron Gretz, Ms. Swekel will continue to develop the organization’s reputation for artistic excellence, arts education and community outreach.

Annapolis Opera Board of Trustees President, Lee Finney, is delighted to welcome Ms. Swekel to the Annapolis Opera.  “After an exhaustive search, we are thrilled to have found just the right person in our own community who will move the Opera forward into a new chapter with the leadership skills needed to sustain and grow the availability and affordability of live opera into the next generation of opera lovers.”

Ms. Swekel has managed several different nonprofit arts organizations in the Annapolis region for more than 15 years and has also created and managed performance tours and recording projects with renowned artists nationally and internationally.  Her professional background, as well as her relationships within the Annapolis arts community, will be great assets in her new role managing the Annapolis Opera as it seeks to develop a broader and more diverse audience, introduce younger generations to the joys of live opera and continue to provide a platform for aspiring young opera singers.

In her previous positions, Ms. Swekel focused on enhancing performing arts in the greater Annapolis community, especially for youth, through her work with the Chesapeake Youth Symphony Orchestra and the Children’s Theatre of Annapolis. Prior to these positions, she cofounded the Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra (an ensemble of international virtuoso artists), worked with major orchestras nationwide in concert production and produced recording projects in several genres.

Kathy Swekel is a 30 year resident of Anne Arundel County and resides in Arnold with her family. On her new role as General Manager of the Annapolis Opera, she says, “I love being part of the vibrant arts community that has grown in Annapolis and the Opera is a premiere company in the area.  Few cities are as fortunate as we are to have not only great art, but great artists living and working in our midst. We are all the recipients of this great gift, which enhances all our lives.”
