Opera LogoThe Annapolis Opera is kicking off its 42nd anniversary subscription season with “Opera with a Twist,” a concert that will celebrate the complexities and disguises so often found in opera with a rich and diverse range of operatic styles. Whether it be the twist of a disguising mustache or a plot twist involving hidden love or a secret wedding, each of the arias to be performed entails an element of the unexpected.

The performers are amongst Annapolis Opera’s favorite singers, and include Soprano Julie-Anne Hamula, Mezzo Soprano Chrystal E. Williams, Tenor Mackenzie Whitney, and Baritone Armando Piña Lopez. They will be accompanied by Maestro Ron Gretz, now in his 32nd year as Artistic Director of the Annapolis Opera. The arias to be performed include selections from Donizetti’s L’Elisir d’amore, Cimarosa’s Il Matrimonio Segreto, Verdi’s Il Trovatore and La Traviata, Massenet’s Manon and Don Quichotte, Rossini’s Il barbiere di Sevillia, Saint-Saens’ Samson et Dalila, Leoncavallo’s I Pagliacci, Lehar’s Merry Widow, Bizet’s Carmen, and Strauss’s Die Fledermaus.

“Everyone – from  devoted opera lovers to first timers – will appreciate the music in this concert,” commented Annapolis Opera President Lee Finney. “There are selections from famous operas as well as pieces that are performed less often, making this a wonderful opportunity to soak in the full range of operatic styles. The concert format is a great way for us to showcase the talents of  our singers and to provide our audience with a unique blend of performances, all at a very affordable ticket price.”

The concert will take place on Sunday, October 26 at 3:00 pm at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Annapolis. Tickets are $37 and $17 for students with a valid student ID. Ticket fees are $5per ticket for tickets purchased at the Maryland Hall box office or $4 per ticket for tickets purchased online at www.annapolisopera.org and printed at home.
