Happy 35th to Hospice of the Chesapeake

hospiceHospice of the Chesapeake announced today that it will celebrate several significant milestones on Friday, September 19, 2014, the organization’s 35th anniversary.

Over the last twelve months, Hospice of the Chesapeake has cared for more than 5,000 individuals through its many programs and services including hospice care, grief and transition support services through Chesapeake Life Center, palliative care services through Chesapeake Palliative Medicine, and specialized services for children through Chesapeake Kids.  Overall, Hospice of the Chesapeake provided more care for individuals in the community living with illness and loss than ever before in its history.  Additionally in 2013, over $1,000,000 was provided in uncompensated care for those who needed services, but lacked the resources to pay for Hospice of the Chesapeake’s care.

As the organization prepares to celebrate 35 years serving the community, future predictions suggest that the need for hospice and palliative care and supportive services will continue to grow, based on significant changes in the population demographics and advances in science and technology.  These changes are based upon a rapidly aging population, patients living longer with illness, increased demand for support services and significant changes to healthcare financing and delivery of care.

With these realities in mind, Hospice of the Chesapeake created a strategic vision to guide it through 2020.  This plan focuses on the changing healthcare environment and will allow for the development of programs and services to meet the changing needs of those in the community living with advanced complex illness and those who care for them.

To better serve the community, Hospice of the Chesapeake will begin construction of a new Inpatient Care Facility in the fall of 2014.  Thanks to the generosity of its donors, the new Inpatient Care Center will be located on Hospice of the Chesapeake’s newly named John and Cathy Belcher Campus in Pasadena.  This new facility, designed by renowned architect Cathy Purple Cherry, will be centrally located within 20 miles of several major healthcare centers.  Hospice of the Chesapeake plans to break-ground on this new construction on Friday, September 19th, the date of its 35th anniversary.  A planned grand opening is scheduled for early Fall 2015. This new facility will provide a state-of-the-art acute healthcare facility that offers patients needing significant pain and symptom management an alternative to hospitalization.

As a part of its strategic planning it became evident that the residential care model offered in the Tate Hospice House would not be sufficient to meet the complex healthcare needs of the growing patient population.  Based on these facts and in preparation for the opening of the new Inpatient Care Center, the organization has decided the Tate Hospice House will begin to stop admissions on September 2, 2014 to prepare for closing on October 3, 2014.  Hospice of the Chesapeake will work with its patients and families to find alternative room and board options with its community partners.

The Tate Hospice House has been a valued community treasure for many years and has served hundreds of families.  Donors, volunteers and staff alike have cared for and nurtured those who benefited from the Tate Hospice House and the organization plans to continue those legacies on its new campus.

Please join Hospice of the Chesapeake in honoring its past and embracing the future as it prepares to care for those living with illness and loss over the next 35 years.
