Two Annapolis teens, Casey Baum 14 and Sophia Speciale 15, are starring in a new production of Neil Simon’s Brighton Beach Memoirs at the Bowie Playhouse, August 29 to September 13. Casey is the son of Susan and Dan Baum and is a resident of Arnold. Sophie is the daughter of Margo and Alessandro Speciale, MD.  She lives in Annapolis. They both attend The Key School in Annapolis.

Casey stars as the narrator, Eugene, and Sophia plays Nora, the beautiful and ambitious 16 year old with dreams of Broadway. The play is set in 1937 Brooklyn over one tumultuous week in the life of a Jewish family.

Neil Simon’s semi-autobiographical play is seen through the eyes of 15 year old Eugene who keeps a detailed journal of his family’s eccentricities. The fast-paced play whirls through the crowded daily lives of close-packed relatives as they struggle with the economic realities of the Depression and their personal conflicts.  As Father says, “If you didn’t have a problem, you wouldn’t live in this house!”

The play, which sparkles with Simon’s trademark humor, premiered on Broadway in 1983, running 1299 performances and winning two Tony awards.  It was made into a movie in 1986 and had a Broadway revival in 2009.

The Prince George’s Little Theatre production at the Bowie Playhouse is directed by Ken Kienas and produced by Jenna Jones Paradis. It runs weekends at the Bowie Playhouse, 16500 White Marsh Park Drive in Bowie, August 29 to September 13.  The Friday and Saturday evening performances are at 8 p.m with 2 pm matinees on August 31 and September 7.  Tickets are $20; $15 for seniors and under 18; $13 for groups of ten or more.
