Baysox’ ship sunk by Sea Dogs

baysoxnavyPortland starter Brian Johnson pitched eight shutout innings for the Sea Dogs in a 3-1 extra-innings win over the Baysox Tuesday night in front of 1,500 members of the United States Naval Academy Summer Plebe class. The Baysox lost in 11 innings after scoring a run in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game 1-1.

Despite allowing three hits, Johnson faced the minimum of 24 batters in eight innings as the Sea Dogs were able to turn a double play after each Baysox hit to wipe out the baserunners. The Baysox first runners to make it past second base came during the ninth inning, game-tying rally.

After four scoreless innings to open the game, Portland got on the board first in the top of the fifth inning against Baysox starter Tim Berry. Keury De La Cruz hit a one-out double to right field and scored on a Jonathan Roof two-out double to left field to give the Sea Dogs a 1-0 lead.

The Baysox came back to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth inning against Portland closer Noe Ramirez. Michael Ohlman hit a lead off infield single and Sharlon Schoop was then hit-by-a-pitch. Glynn Davis moved both runners over with a sacrifice bunt and K.D. Kang, pinch-running for Ohlman, scored on a Mike Yastrzemski groundout to make the score 1-1.

The Sea Dogs broke the tie in the top of the 11th inning against Baysox reliever Marcel Prado. Stefan Welch hit a lead off single to right field and scored on a Sean Coyle double to left field. Coyle moved to third base on the throw and scored on a Dave Chester one-out single to left field to give Portland a 3-1 lead.

Berry threw six innings and allowed one run on three hits while striking out six and walking one in the no decision. Baysox reliever Matt Bischoff pitched two scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out one batter. The Baysox used three pitchers in the ninth inning after reliever Julio DePaula gave up a double and a pair of walks to load the bases with one out. Ashur Tolliver struck out a batter and Oliver Drake recorded the next four outs, pitching a scoreless 10th inning. Prado pitched the 11th inning and allowed two runs on three hits while striking out one in the loss.

Portland reliever Robby Scott picked up the win, pitching two scoreless innings to finish off the game, allowing one hit and striking out four.

The Baysox are home through Thursday, Aug. 7 for a three-game homestand against the Portland Sea Dogs. Promotional highlights include American Muscle Night Wednesday, Aug. 6 beginning at 6:35 p.m. and the Travis Pastrana bobblehead giveaway Thursday, Aug. 7 at 6:35 p.m.
