Crooks steal copper, cause power failure, likely suffer burns

powerfailOn August 3, 2014, at approximately 10:00 a.m., officers from the Northern District responded to the Baltimore, Gas and Electric (BGE) substation located in the 700 block of Cabin Branch Lane, Linthicum in reference to a burglary.

Upon arrival, officers met with a representative from BGE, who advised that he responded to the substation for a power outage that occurred at approximately 5:20 a.m. Upon inspection, he discovered a theft of copper wiring. A further inspection revealed the theft occurred from two high-side air break structures.

Based on the evidence left at the scene, it was determined that the theft caused the power outage as a result of the copper wiring making contact with a live part of the structure. It is possible that the suspect(s) sustained obvious burn injuries. The total loss value is unknown at this time.

Area hospitals are being asked to be on the lookout for anyone seeking medical attention for extensive burn injuries caused by extreme heat and/or electricity. Anyone who was in the area of the 600 block of Camp Meade Rd South and may have witnessed a suspicious vehicle or activity or has information in connection with this burglary is urged to call the department’s metal theft unit at 410-222-6003 or Metro Crime Stoppers at 1-866-7LOCKUP.
