Music for Strings and Piano — July 25th

On Friday July 25 at 8 pm in Annapolis, Brian Ganz and Friends will present “Music for Strings and Piano” with artists from the International Music Festival at Mt. St. Mary’s University. Pianist Ganz will be joined by four talented string musicians performing works of Schumann and Tchaikovsky. The featured artists are Emmanuel Borowsky, violin; Cecylia Barczyk, cello; Sharon Eng, viola; Blanka Bednarz, violin; and Brian Ganz, piano.  The concert will be held at the Unitarian Universalist Church (UUCA), 333 Dubois Road. The featured string artists are on the faculty of the International Music Institute and Festival, held every summer at Mt. St. Mary’s University.  The Festival attracts young musicians from the USA and around the world. The Institute faculty is prominent performing artists and teachers with special gifts for working with future musicians.

Tchaikovsky Trio in A minor for Piano, Violin and Cello, Op. 50:

This “Brian Ganz and Friends” program is part of a year-long ticketed concert series offered monthly on 4th Fridays at 8pm at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Annapolis (UUCA) to benefit the church’s work.  Next month the concert will take place on August 22 – Ganz offers an in-depth exploration of the composer’s craft with his first Piano Talk of the series.  Music of Frederic Chopin will be featured. On September 26 the program will feature 20th century classical masterpieces for flute and piano with Karen Johnson and Brian Ganz.

Brian Ganz, widely regarded as one of the leading pianists of his generation, began his “Extreme Chopin” quest to perform all of Frédéric Chopin’s works three years ago. His sold out recital at the Music Center at Strathmore launched Ganz’s ambitious endeavor to perform the approximately 250 works of Chopin over the next decade.  The next concerts in the series will take place at Strathmore on February 7 and 8, 2015.

Prof. Cecylia Barczyk cello, has achieved international recognition as artist, successful teacher, and humanitarian. She has given concerts, recitals, and master classes throughout Europe, Asia and the Americas, including appearances with prominent orchestras around the world. She won top prizes in prestigious music competitions in the US, Europe and South America. Since 1983, she has taught at Towson University, continuing her solo career while educating young cellists from virtually every part of the globe.

Blanka Bednarz, violin, is an alumna of the J. Kaliszewska Talent School in Poznan, Poland. She holds degrees from the University of Kansas, and the New England Conservatory. As soloist she has performed with the Connecticut Virtuosi, Symphony and Chamber Orchestras of the New England Conservatory, Gettysburg Chamber Orchestra, Sinfonietta Polonia and Delaware County Symphony. She has performed internationally in a variety of venues, including Jordan Hall in Boston, Beijing Concert Hall, Philadelphia Ethical Society, Weil Hall at Carnegie Hall and Carnegie Hall, and Aula UAM in Poznan.

American violist Sharon Eng is a seasoned international strings educator, clinician, chamber recitalist and conductor.  Her rich musical career has spanned five continents, including contracts with the American Ballet Theatre and New York City Opera, and such leadership positions as the Greenwich Philharmonic, Jakarta Chamber Orchestra and Polish Sinfonietta. Her solo viola performances have involved collaborations with pianists on both coasts of the United States and internationally. Eng has served on the faculty of the summer International Music Institute and Festival at Coolfont and at Mount St. Mary’s University in Maryland since IMIF’s inception in 2003. Eng, earned her Bachelor and Master Degrees in viola performance at the Juilliard School.

Emmanuel Borowsky, violin, has been lauded as an outstanding musician of his generation, performing concerts internationally from a young age. Emmanuel has been featured as a soloist with respected orchestras including the Tianjin Symphony Orchestra, Eisenach Festival Orchestra, Young German Symphony Orchestra, Poznan Symphony, National Conservatory Orchestra of Jordan, Israeli Soloists Orchestra, Szczecin Philharmonic, Susquehanna Symphony Orchestra, Loudon Symphony, Katowice Philharmonic, and Rzezow Chamber Orchestra. His performance with the Polish Camerata was broadcast internationally by Pol-Sat TV. Among the awards Emmanuel has received are the Erick Friedman Prize for Outstanding Young Musicians, Pro Musica Award and Merit Award from the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts.
