Man convicted of child abuse, rape of child in 1997 Glen Burnie rape

sex offendersAfter less than an hour of deliberation, an Anne Arundel County jury on Friday found 62-year-old James Lawyer Sr. guilty of Child Abuse, two counts of Second-Degree Sex Offense, three counts of Third-Degree Sex Offense and Second-Degree Rape of a young girl in Glen Burnie, State’s Attorney Anne Colt Leitess announced.

The incidents of abuse took place at a Glen Burnie residence over a three-year span beginning in 1997, when the victim was 5 years old. The victim reported the abuse last year, at age 21.

This is the third guilty conviction in a child sex abuse trial for the State’s Attorney’s Office in recent weeks.

“This case reminds us that most child sexual offenders prey upon children that they know,” Leitess said. “It also serves as an important reminder to parents and caregivers to have a conversation with their children, even at a young age, of what is appropriate touching and that even a person they know and trust needs to obey those boundaries.”

Immediately following the verdict, Assistant State’s Attorney Pamela Alban requested that Mr. Lawyer’s bond be revoked. The court granted that request and he will be held at the Anne Arundel County Detention Center until sentencing on August 25.

Leitess commended Ms. Alban, who prosecuted the case, and the Anne Arundel County Police Department for their work.
