September 6 Great Issues Forum “Vices of Our Political System: In Madison’s Time—and Ours.” Pulitzer Prize-winning author, Stanford University professor, and noted Constitutional historian Jack N. Rakove will present a lecture on “James Madison’s ‘Ticklish Experiment.’” Participants attend seminars on selections from “The Federalist.” A buffet lunch will be provided. This event will be held in Mellon Hall from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Tickets are $75, including lunch. College students with valid student ID may attend the afternoon lecture free of charge. October 3 The Friday Night Concert Series presents guitarists Julian Lage and Chris Eldridge. Grammy-nominated guitarist Julian Lage’s eclectic style blends chamber music, modern jazz, and other genres. Chris Eldridge is a founding member of Punch Brothers and more recent member of the seminal bluegrass group The Seldom Scene. As a duo, Lage and Eldridge are known for their improvisation, spontaneous compositions, and virtuosic refinement. The concert will be held in Francis Scott Key Auditorium at 8 p.m.

Mitchell Gallery: October 24 to December 12, “Along the Eastern Road: Hiroshige’s Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido.” This exhibition features 55 woodblock prints by Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858), recording the scenic views along the famous “Eastern Road” that linked Edo (now Tokyo) with Kyoto, the ancient imperial capital of Japan. This popular series, known as the “Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido Road,” was published in 1833-1834 and established Hiroshige’s reputation as the foremost artist of the topographical landscape.“Along the Eastern Road: Hiroshige’s Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido” is organized by the Reading Public Museum, Reading, Pennsylvania. October 31 The St. John’s Friday Night Concert Series presents pianist Brian Ganz, a member of the piano faculty at the Peabody Conservatory and St. Mary’s College of Maryland. Ganz has appeared as a soloist with such orchestras as the St. Louis Symphony, the St. Petersburg Philharmonic, the Baltimore Symphony, the National Philharmonic, and the National Symphony. The concert will be held in the Francis Scott Key Auditorium at 8 p.m.

November 9 Meet the Authors Caritas Fundraiser. Three acclaimed authors, Ruth Kassinger (“A Garden of Marvels”), Steve Vogel (“Through the Perilous Fight”), and St. John’s alumna Barbara Rogan (“A Dangerous Fiction”), discuss their work and the writing life.
The presentation is followed by a wine and hors d’oeuvres reception and book signing. Tickets are $35 in advance; $40 at the door. The event will be held in the Francis Scott Key Auditorium at 3 p.m.
