August 22 Dean’s Lecture, Topic to be announced, by Pamela Kraus, dean, St. John’s College, Annapolis. The lecture will be held in the Francis Scott Key Auditorium at 8 p.m.

Mitchell Gallery: August 23 to October 12 “Annapolis Collects: The Mitchell Gallery Celebrates 25 Years.” Guest curators Jim Cheevers (senior curator at the U.S. Naval Academy Museum), Tom Dawson (Dawson Gallery), Joni Jones (director, Banneker-Douglass Museum) and Nadja Maril (Annapolis writer, editor, and author) have selected a variety of works from private collections, museums, and historic houses in and around Annapolis that span a wide range of tastes, styles, and periods. August 29 “Nighttime Walks with Proust: ‘Le Pays obscur par le clair de lune,’” by Patricia Locke, St. John’s College tutor. The lecture will be held in the Francis Scott Key Auditorium at 8 p.m.

September 6 Great Issues Forum “Vices of Our Political System: In Madison’s Time—and Ours.” Pulitzer Prize-winning author, Stanford University professor, and noted Constitutional historian Jack N. Rakove will present a lecture on “James Madison’s ‘Ticklish Experiment.’” Participants attend seminars on selections from “The Federalist.” A buffet lunch will be provided. This event will be held in Mellon Hall from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Tickets are $75, including lunch. College students with valid student ID may attend the afternoon lecture free of charge. September 11 Annual Caritas Society Membership Tea. Celebrate the Caritas Society’s 45th year at the home of St. John’s President Christopher Nelson, from 3 to 5 p.m.

September 12 “Dostoevsky’s ‘The Brothers Karamazov,’” by Chester Burke, St. John’s College tutor. The lecture will be held in the Francis Scott Key Auditorium at 8 p.m.

Mitchell Gallery: September 17 Art Express. Art Educator Lucinda Edinberg will give a lunchtime gallery talk on the “Annapolis Collects” exhibition from 12:15 to 12:45 p.m.

September 19 “Privacy and the Constitution,” by William Braithwaite, St. John’s College tutor. The lecture will be held in the Francis Scott Key Auditorium at 8 p.m.

September 26 “The ‘Iliad’’s Cosmic Seduction,” by Seemee Ali, professor, Department of English, Carthage College. The lecture will be held in the Francis Scott Key Auditorium at 8 p.m.

Mitchell Gallery: October 2 Book Club. Join members of the Mitchell Gallery Book Club for a docent tour of the “Annapolis Collects” exhibition followed by a discussion of selections from “The Proud Possessors: The Lives, Times and Tastes of Some Adventurous American Art Collectors,” by Aline B. October 3 The Friday Night Concert Series presents guitarists Julian Lage and Chris Eldridge. Grammy-nominated guitarist Julian Lage’s eclectic style blends chamber music, modern jazz, and other genres. Chris Eldridge is a founding member of Punch Brothers and more recent member of the seminal bluegrass group The Seldom Scene. As a duo, Lage and Eldridge are known for their improvisation, spontaneous compositions, and virtuosic refinement. The concert will be held in Francis Scott Key Auditorium at 8 p.m.

Mitchell Gallery: October 5 Curators Panel and Discussion. Curators Jim Cheevers, Tom Dawson, Joni Jones, and Nadja Maril will discuss the “Annapolis Collects” exhibition from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in the Great Hall.

October 7 Caritas Society Dinner at Killarney House (Davidsonville, Md.) Dinner. Enjoy a meal with Caritas friends, from 5 to 9 p.m. The restaurant will donate $10 of meal cost to Caritas. Reservations required. Cost is $25. Purchase reservations or tickets online at www.sjc.edu/Caritas

October 16 Caritas Society Social Luncheon and Program. Steve Gunn, editor, Capital Gazette Communications, presents “The Capital: Our Hometown Newspaper.” The event will take place in the Francis Scott Key Lobby from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Reservations required. October 17 Steiner Lecture, A reading and translation of poetry by David Ferry, professor emeritus, Wellesley College. The lecture will be held in the Francis Scott Key Auditorium at 8p.m.

October 24 “The Age of Chronos and the Age of Zeus,” by Janet Dougherty, St. John’s College tutor. The lecture will be held in the Francis Scott Key Auditorium at 8 p.m.

Mitchell Gallery: October 24 to December 12, “Along the Eastern Road: Hiroshige’s Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido.” This exhibition features 55 woodblock prints by Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858), recording the scenic views along the famous “Eastern Road” that linked Edo (now Tokyo) with Kyoto, the ancient imperial capital of Japan. This popular series, known as the “Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido Road,” was published in 1833-1834 and established Hiroshige’s reputation as the foremost artist of the topographical landscape.“Along the Eastern Road: Hiroshige’s Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido” is organized by the Reading Public Museum, Reading, Pennsylvania. October 31 The St. John’s Friday Night Concert Series presents pianist Brian Ganz, a member of the piano faculty at the Peabody Conservatory and St. Mary’s College of Maryland. Ganz has appeared as a soloist with such orchestras as the St. Louis Symphony, the St. Petersburg Philharmonic, the Baltimore Symphony, the National Philharmonic, and the National Symphony. The concert will be held in the Francis Scott Key Auditorium at 8 p.m.

November 2014

November 7 “Refugee Children of the Greek Civil War,” by Loring Danforth, professor, Department of Anthropology, Bates College. The lecture will be held in the Francis Scott Key Auditorium at 8 p.m.

November 9 Meet the Authors Caritas Fundraiser. Three acclaimed authors, Ruth Kassinger (“A Garden of Marvels”), Steve Vogel (“Through the Perilous Fight”), and St. John’s alumna Barbara Rogan (“A Dangerous Fiction”), discuss their work and the writing life.

The presentation is followed by a wine and hors d’oeuvres reception and book signing. Tickets are $35 in advance; $40 at the door. The event will be held in the Francis Scott Key Auditorium at 3 p.m.

November 14 “Subjective Sensory Experience and the Fallacy of Neural Codes,” by Leslie Kay, professor, University of Chicago. The lecture will be held in the Francis Scott Key Auditorium at 8 p.m.

November 21 “On Classical Liberalism and the ‘Liberal’ Point of View,” by Roberto Salinas-León, scholar, CATO Institute. The lecture will be held in the Francis Scott Key Auditorium at 8 p.m.

Mitchell Gallery: December 4 Book Club. Join members of the Mitchell Gallery Book Club for a docent tour of the “Hiroshige” exhibition followed by a discussion of “Kokoro: Hints and Echoes of Japanese Inner Life”, a collection of stories, anecdotes, essays and journal entries by Lafcadio Hearn, from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Registration is required.
