Firefighters respond to 3 drowning, near-drowning incidents yesterday

FD_BannerAnne Arundel County firefighters responded to three unrelated drowning and near-drowning incidents on Monday, resulting in two fatalities.

The first incident occurred just after 1:30 Monday afternoon at Elks Camp Barrett in the 1000 block of Chesterfield Road in Crownsville. In this incident, a nine year old male was removed from the pool unconscious and in cardiac arrest. Lifeguards immediately began CPR and the child was breathing on his own upon arrival of firefighters and paramedics. The patient was transported in serious condition by Maryland State Police helicopter to the Pediatric Emergency Department at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.

The second incident occurred just before 9:00 p.m. Monday at the Arundel Mills Mall, 7000 Arundel Mills Circle in Hanover. Firefighters and paramedics responding to the report of a subject in the water were informed by mall security that they had witnessed an adult male enter a three acre sediment pond and not surface. When immediate efforts by firefighters to locate the subject were unsuccessful, divers were placed into the water. The body of an adult male, estimated to be in his twenties, was recovered around 11:15 p.m.

While units were operating at Arundel Mills Mall, a third incident occurred just after 9:00 p.m. in the 500 block of Bruce Avenue in Odenton. Firefighters responded for a possible drowning and arrived to find a 57 year old male who had already been removed from the pool with CPR being performed by bystanders. Despite resuscitation efforts by firefighters and paramedics on the scene, the patient was declared dead on the scene.
