Curve send Baysox back to 500

Baysox May 2014The Baysox (54-54) lost to Altoona (44-65) 6-3 Sunday night to drop three out of four games in the series and fall back to .500 on the season for the first time since June 15. With an Akron win, the Baysox fall to 4.5 games behind the RubberDucks for the second playoff spot in the division with a critical three-game series on the horizon.

The Baysox were victims of the big inning for the second consecutive night, falling behind early after a five-run second inning from the Curve that was aided by a pair of Baysox errors. Saturday night, Altoona led 10-0 after four innings.

After being shutout Saturday night, the Baysox took an early lead Sunday evening against Altoona starter Pat Ludwig. Mike Yastrzemski hit a lead off single to right field and scored from first on a Niuman Romero double to right field. With one out, K.D. Kang singled to right field to bring Romero home and give Bowie a 2-0 lead.

Altoona came storming back in the top of the second inning against Baysox starter Eduardo Rodriguez with a two-out rally. Carlos Paulino got things started with a single to second base and Jarek Cunningham followed with a double to left field. Gift Ngoepe brought both runners home with a single to left field before scoring on an Alen Hanson single to right field. Drew Maggi then reached on a fielding error by Romero at third base and Josh Bell made him pay with an RBI single to right field. The final run of the inning scored when Stetson Allie reached on the second error of the inning by Romero to give the Curve a 5-2 lead.

The Baysox got one run back in the bottom of the fourth inning. Michael Ohlman hit a one-out double to left field and moved to third base on a Glynn Davis single to shortstop before scoring on a Sharlon Schoop sacrifice fly to make the score 5-3.

Willy Garcia answered with a solo home run for Altoona in the top of the fifth inning against Baysox reliever Julio DePaula to put the Curve back up 6-3.

Rodriguez threw four innings and allowed five runs (three earned) on six hits while striking out three and walking three in the loss. DePaula pitched three innings and allowed one run on three hits while striking out three batters. Reliever Jason Gurka pitched a scoreless eighth inning, allowing one hit and striking out one. Baysox closer Oliver Drake pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning for the Baysox, striking out two batters.

Ludwig picked up the win for Altoona, throwing six innings and allowing three runs on eight hits while striking out three and walking four.

LHP Anthony Vasquez (5-6, 4.56) takes the mound for the Baysox Monday as the team plays the first game in a three game home series with the Akron RubberDucks. He will be opposed by LHP Shawn Morimando (1-1, 1.00).

The Baysox depart for Akron Monday, July 28 to begin a seven game homestand that also includes a stop in Binghamton. The Baysox return home for a three-game homestand against Portland Tuesday, August 5.
