Baysox sneak around Curve

Baysox 2013IMG_9937Baysox first baseman Christian Walker broke a tie with his league-leading 19th home run of the season in the sixth inning on the way to a 4-3 win over the Altoona Curve Tuesday. The Baysox are now on a season-high six game home winning streak despite being outhit by Altoona 11-5 Tuesday night.

The Baysox struck first in the bottom of the second inning against Altoona starter Joely Rodriguez. Dariel Alvarez drew a lead off walk and Chris Marrero followed with a single to center field. Michael Ohlman brought both runners home with a double to center field and he came home on a single to left field from David Adams to give Bowie a 3-0 lead.

Altoona got one run back in the top of the third inning after a solo home run to left field from Gift Ngoepe against Baysox starter Tim Berry that made the score 3-1.

The Curve cut into the Baysox lead again in the top of the fifth inning. Jarek Cunningham hit a lead off single to left field and moved to third base on a double to left field from Kelson Brown. With two outs, Drew Maggi reached on a fielding error by Garabez Rosa that allowed Cunningham to score and make the score 3-2.

Brown tied the game 3-3 for Altoona in the top of the sixth inning against Baysox reliever Ashur Tolliver with a solo homer to left-center field.

Christian Walker gave the Baysox the lead right back with a lead off home run to left field in the bottom of the sixth inning to make the score 4-3.

Berry pitched five innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits while striking out six and walking two in the no decision. Tolliver pitched two innings and allowed one run on three hits while striking out two in the win. Reliever Julio DePaula earned his first Baysox save, throwing the final two innings and allowing two hits while striking out four.

Rodriguez took the loss for Altoona, pitching five innings and allowing four runs on five hits while striking out four and walking two.

RHP Zach Davies (4-4, 3.69) takes the mound for the Baysox Wednesday as the team plays the third game in a four game home series against the Altoona Curve. He will be opposed by RHP Adrian Sampson (5-5, 2.90).

The Baysox are home through Thursday, July 3 for a four-game home series against the Altoona Curve. Promotional Highlights include Military Appreciation Night Wednesday, July 2 at 6:35 p.m. and the Red, White & Boom Independence Day Celebration Thursday, July 3 at 6:35 p.m.
